MSc Sustainability and Environmental Management

Overview

The MSc Sustainability and Environmental Management is a postgraduate course that aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to improve the culture of sustainability within their organization. The course is accredited by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

Course Description

The course is designed to provide students with a critical understanding of environmental policy and law, sustainable business management, and tools for delivering sustainable solutions to environmental problems. The course is divided into three stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Masters.


Postgraduate Certificate Stage

  • Students must complete three core modules:
    • International Environmental Policy and Law
    • Sustainable Business Management
    • Tools for Delivering Sustainable Solutions to Environmental Problems

Postgraduate Diploma Stage

  • Students must complete the three core modules at Postgraduate Certificate stage as well as three optional modules.

Masters Stage

  • To gain the full MSc, students must complete the Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma plus the Independent Scholarly Activity, which is a triple module worth 60 credits.

Core Modules

  • International Environmental Policy and Law
    • This module aims to develop a critical knowledge and understanding of environmental policy and environmental law and regulation used for the protection of the environment.
    • Module learning outcomes:
      • Critically appraise the fundamental principles of international environmental law and the legal and institutional framework in which they have developed and are implemented.
      • Demonstrate a critical understanding of how policy and legislation are used to mitigate current environmental issues and approaches employed to achieve compliance.
      • Critically evaluate the role and effectiveness of the main institutions and frameworks for implementing appropriate interventions.
    • Module content:
      • The nature of the environment
      • International environmental law: history, sources, international law and the European Union, international law and the UK, major international agreements
      • UK environmental law
      • Regulation of environmental law: standards and standard-setting, enforcement, mechanisms to monitor and improve regulation
      • The UK Legislative Framework and the environment: sources, classification and associated judicial systems, interpretation, enforcement, environmental policy and regulatory regime, Common Law in the protection of the environment
      • Major UK environmental legislation: Town and country planning, Industrial Pollution Control regimes, Air quality and climate change, waste, contaminated land, water, Nuisance, Nature Conservation.
      • Environmental compliance within organisations: Compliance tools, Advantages and disadvantages of compliance,
      • The future of environmental law and its regulation
      • Employability Skills: Problem solving, Consultancy skills, Team work and collaboration
      • Digital Skills: Ethical and legal requirements surrounding the use and re-use of information and identify sources of relevant advice, Using a comprehensive range of information sources in any medium, including specialised information such as archives, data sets, special collections, colleagues and contacts in research networks to access current and relevant information.
      • Research Skills: Research problem identification and framing, Research design and methodologies

Careers

Upon completion of this programme, students will be equipped with the skills needed to improve the culture of sustainability within their organization. Additionally, through enhancing their communication, employability and digital skills, they will be well placed to perform better in their current role, seek a promotion or secure a new job.


Entry Requirements

  • Students will normally need an undergraduate degree (minimum 2:2). A science or related degree is preferred but a range of degrees will be considered.
  • If students don’t have this qualification but do have extensive and relevant work experience at an appropriate level, their application will be considered.
  • Students must provide a CV detailing their academic and work experience and a reference from their workplace or the institution where they undertook their previous study.

English Language Qualifications

  • Students will normally need one of the following English Language qualifications:
    • GCE O level English Language: Grade C
    • GCSE English: Grade C
  • If English is not their first language, or they have not successfully completed their highest level of qualification in English, they will need an English language qualification. For this course, they will need at least one of the following:
    • IELTS 6.0 (minimum of 5.5 in any areas)
    • TOEFL 550 (paper based) 213 (computer based) or 80 (internet based)
    • Pearson Test of Academic English: 51
    • Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Pass
    • London Tests of English: they accept level 5 for postgraduate courses
    • International GCE O Level English Language: Grade C
    • International GCSE English/English as a Second Language: Grade C

Fees and Funding

  • 2024/25 for new entrants:
    • Per 20 credits: £1,000
    • Modules: 7 (six 20 credit modules and one 60 credit module)
    • Cost: £9,000
  • 2025/26 for new entrants:
    • Per 20 credits: £1,030
    • Modules: 7 (six 20 credit modules and one 60 credit module)
    • Cost: £9,270
  • Exemptions for IEMA Practitioner Members:
    • If students are an IEMA practitioner member, they are entitled to exemptions worth 60 credits on the three modules covered in the Postgraduate Certificate stage of this course, a saving on the cost of the full MSc.
    • This means that they will join the course at the Postgraduate Diploma stage and complete a total of three optional modules plus the Independent Scholarly Activity to achieve the MSc Sustainability and Environmental Management.

How to Apply

  • Students can apply directly to the University.
  • They will need to provide the following documents when they apply:
    • Official photo identification such as a passport or driving licence
    • Current CV
    • Copies of certificates and transcripts or a letter of testimony for previous qualifications
  • Documents not in English or Welsh must be accompanied by a certified translation by a professional translator/translation company. Each translation must contain:
    • Confirmation from the translator that it is an accurate translation of the original document
    • The date of the translation
    • The full name and signature of the translator, or an authorised official of the company
    • The translator’s contact details
