Course Overview

You will learn to critically evaluate the evidence for nursing assessments, interventions and care and to plan the most effective care to meet the individual needs of patients following a stroke. The course components include: the scientific basis of stroke, the assessment and management of acute care and rehabilitation, ethical dilemmas in stroke care, end of life care in stroke, service development and national stroke policy, the individual roles of the MDT and the evolving role of nurses in stroke care.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Critically evaluate relevant research to promote evidence-based practice
• Debate the ethical and legal issues associated with stroke nursing practice
• Debate nurses' contribution to interdisciplinary teamwork to provide evidence-based care
• Develop proficiency in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of care
• Discuss policies and national audits that influence the development of service and care provision for individuals following stroke
