Course essentials

This online MSc and PG Cert programmes are suitable for health professionals with a responsibility for the management of diabetes. The programme is delivered at postgraduate level and will provide students with an advanced applied knowledge of diabetes assessment, interventions and care organisation relevant to both specialist and primary health care settings. On completion of the programme students will have demonstrated a critical understanding of applied diabetes management processes; including: identifying individualised care management plans for people with diabetes; analysing and optimising diabetes care delivery systems; and how to manage common psychological problems. You may apply to complete the full MSc programme (180 credits) over two years, or to the PG Cert (60 credits) over one year.


Course Aims

  • To equip students with critically developed advanced practice skills for diabetes clinical care and management.
  • To develop students into independent learners who are able to identify and synthesise clinical problems and issues at both the patient and care system levels.
  • To provide an educational framework to enable students to acquire and demonstrate both generic transferable competencies in formulating diabetes management plans.

The programme is delivered part-time via distance learning through KCL’s online learning system KEATS, with embedded e-Learning materials, comprising: interactive presentations; webinars; online seminars; and directed access to electronic learning resources (e.g. journal articles).


Assessment

Your performance will be assessed through a combination of coursework and written/practical examinations. Forms of assessment may typically include written assignments such as essays and case studies, and examinations such as multiple-choice or essay questions.

Careers

This programme is a multidisciplinary programme for all health professionals who want to develop an applied skills in diabetes care. It will appeal to professionals who wish to specialise in diabetes care either in primary, intermediate or secondary care settings. Previous graduated have: gone on to become practice nurses, GPs, pharmacists, dietitians and podiatrists with a special interest in diabetes. Other graduates have gone to become diabetes specialist nurses. The programme will provide a comprehensive training in diabetes care, which will improve patient care and outcomes.
