Program Overview

Regenerative Dentistry MSc

Key information

Delivery mode: In person Study mode: Full time Duration: One year full-time, September to September Credit value (UK/ECTS equivalent): UK 180/ECTS 90 Application status: Open Start date: September 2025

Course essentials

This Regenerative Dentistry MSc is research-focused and centred on stem cell biology. It aims to equip you with the laboratory-based research skills you need to pursue a career in research. You’ll start learning the key concepts and basics of the science behind regenerative dentistry, including dental stem cells, iPSCs and ESCs, tooth bioengineering, and the role of stem cells in tooth repair and regeneration. You’ll then move into the laboratory and learn the basics of how to do bench work. This includes being shown how to operate certain microscopes, dissect properly and culture different organisms. Once you’ve improved your laboratory-based research skills, you’ll start conducting your own research project in the field of regenerative dentistry. This is an exciting opportunity to focus on an area of research that you’re most passionate about. For example, previous students have researched topics including:

  • Salivary gland stem cells
  • Stem cells in the middle ear and their role in homeostasis and repair
  • Development of replacement teeth: location of stem cell niches in a range of species
  • A chemical genetics screen for regulators of cranial muscle stem cells
  • Dental pulp stem cells in tooth repair
  • Exploring the relationship between surface free energy and osseointegration with modifiable ceramic coatings
  • Embryonic tooth mesenchymal cells and bioengineering
  • Periodontal tissue regeneration – evaluating different dental stem cell populations
  • Neural crest stem cells and ossification of the mandible

At the end of this MSc in regenerative dentistry, you’ll be able to write a grant proposal, critically evaluate research, conduct your own research and then present your findings.
