Course Overview

This module provides, over five days, training on the skills and knowledge required to function in one of the strategic roles held by practitioners working in Medical Affairs teams of pharmaceutical companies. The module will provide an overview of the roles of medical affairs professionals, their approaches in developing and actioning strategic projects that facilitate the development, commercialisation, life-cycle management and use of new medicines.

Course features

• Knowledge of the commercialisation and marketing of medicines.
• Knowledge of how medicines are regulated.
• Skills to design data gathering instruments to use in the development of medicines.
• Skills to optimise patient engagement in the issues that touch patients especially in the development of medicines.
• Skills to communicate medical information to stakeholders of bio-pharmaceutical companies and internal colleagues.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module students will be able to:

• Create and execute a plan for a medical affairs initiative e.g. for medical education or for securing a successful outcome from the health technology assessment of a product.
• Critically appraise strategic approaches e.g. taken by medical affairs practitioners on a drug development question in a third territory based on notions of commercialisation, regulatory approval, medical practice, public opinion, ethics and corporate responsibility.

Entry Requirements

Minimum entry requirements are either a medical degree (such as an MBBS) or a 2:1 first degree in pharmacy, pharmacology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry or related subject. The course will suit individuals seeking to develop a practical understanding of clinical pharmacology in the pharmaceutical industry e.g. pharmaceutical physicians, scientists in R&D and medical affairs, and regulatory affairs personnel.
