Medicines and the Healthcare Marketplace (7BBP0012)

Course Overview

This module provides advanced training over five days in the principles of how to develop effective medicines through integration of medicines development into the context of the current and future healthcare market. It introduces the topic of clinical development of a product and explains how a medicine can achieve its full potential through acceptance by patients, healthcare professionals, policy makers and regulators, and market positioning.

  • Provides advanced training in the principles of healthcare marketplace assessment that are utilised in the process of drug development.
  • Enables students to critically assess clinical development activities that that are commercially justified and regulatory compliant, and that show understanding of the structure and function of the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Enables students to create patient engagement activities that considers - patient related outcomes, patient organisations, guidelines, regulations, and patient preferences.
  • Provides the ability to appraise the strategies that require a multidisciplinary team for a product, in terms of marketing, pharmacoeconomic and patient access.
  • Enables students to develop methods to effectively disseminate medicines and healthcare market assessments through both verbal presentations and the generation of written reports.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students will be able to:


  • Take an active role in a multidisciplinary team to make a market assessment for a medicine’s development project.
  • Critically assess clinical development activities that that are commercially justified, regulatory compliant and that show understanding of how the pharmaceutical industry is structured and how it functions.
  • Create a patient engagement activity that considers patient related outcomes, patient organisations, guidelines, regulations and patient preferences.
  • Appraise the strategies that a multidisciplinary team needs to implement in terms of marketing, pharmacoeconomic and patient access for a product.

Entry Requirements

Minimum entry requirements are either a medical degree (such as an MBBS) or a 2:1 first degree in pharmacy, pharmacology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry or related subject. The course will suit individuals seeking to develop a practical understanding of medicine development and lifecycle management by the pharmaceutical industry e.g. pharmaceutical physicians, scientists in R&D and medical affairs, and regulatory affairs personnel.
