Program Overview

Advanced Mechanical Engineering

Overview

This full-time Master's programme will deepen your technical ability, broaden your understanding of other branches of engineering, and enhance your research skills.

It is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and develops leadership and managerial strengths that can lead to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

You’ll develop an advanced understanding of:

  • Mechanics
  • Materials selection
  • Manufacturing
  • Mechatronics
  • Computer-aided engineering design
  • Developing integrated mechanical systems

You'll learn the principles underpinning the design and control of mechanical systems, along with computational and simulation methods used to ensure the reliability and robustness of mechanical systems.

You will use industry-standard computational tools and analysis packages for the analysis, design and evaluation of complex systems, and numerical methods for modelling and analysing engineering problems.

Professional Accreditation

Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

Entry Requirements

A second-class Honours degree or equivalent in relevant discipline.

Candidates who do not fulfil the normal entry requirements but have extensive industrial experience in a related area are considered on an individual basis.

English language requirements

  • IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent.

Curriculum

First Year

Core
  • MSc Project
  • Advanced Solid Mechanics
  • Vehicle Powertrain and Dynamics
Optional
  • Statistical Applications of Industrial Big Data
  • Industrial Big Data Analysis and Mining
  • Polymer and Materials Engineering
  • Risk Assessment and Management
  • Supply Chain Management and Production
  • Automotive Tribology and Noise, Vibration and Harshness

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Your learning experiences are varied – a mixture of:

  • formal lectures
  • tutorials and seminars
  • group work
  • an individual project

Independent study is supported by our Virtual Learning Environment, Canvas. Reading lists and suggested resources for independent study provide you with clear direction, while regular contact hours and informal feedback throughout the programme provide all the support you may need.

Additional Course Costs

While there are no compulsory additional costs associated with this course, there may be general additional costs that you may incur as a student. A list of the sort of costs you might expect can be found on our fees and finance section.

Funding Your Studies

It can be hard to know what financial help is available to you as a student.

Further information about the variety of options that can help fund your studies and maximise the money available to you is available on our funding your studies section.

Postgraduate Master's Loan

If you live in England you may be able to apply for a special Government-funded Master's Loan to help pay your tuition fees and living costs. You don't have to pay the loan back until you're earning a certain amount of money.

Scholarships

Every year we award numerous non-repayable scholarships to UK, EU and international students on the basis of academic excellence, personal circumstances or economic hardship. For full details, visit our scholarships section.

Career Prospects

Mechanical Engineering is a very diverse sector and graduate engineers are in high demand around the world. Our graduates find employment in a wide range of engineering and manufacturing environments, from the aerospace, transportation and automotive sectors, to construction and manufacturing, to process industries such as oil, gas and utility companies - as well as research and development. The sector offers a wide range of exciting careers in positions such as:

  • Computer Aided Design Engineer
  • Product Development Engineer
  • Modelling and Simulation Analyst
  • Project Manager

Recent graduates from this programme have gone onto work for Jaguar Land Rover, Ford Motor Company, Horiba MIRA, Cummins, Precision Casting Corporation, Denso Marston, Carnaud MetalBox, and Sulzer.

Research

Our research underpins every level of your programme of study. You will be taught by academics who are working at the forefront of their engineering discipline. This enables us explore with you how theoretical principles are being applied to solve real world challenges.

Your individual project gives you access to our research facilities and provides you with an opportunity to become involved in a much larger research project being carried out with our industrial partners.

Our Mechanical and Process Engineering Research Group undertakes a range of fundamental and applied research projects.
