Program Overview

Technology and Artificial Intelligence Law LLM

Overview

The LLM Technology and Artificial Intelligence Law gives you specialist knowledge of the law regulating technology. The programme covers a range of themes, including:

  • Privacy laws relating to technology
  • Data protection
  • Legal technologies
  • Human rights and technology
  • Regulation of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity

You will learn about the use of technology to address current and emerging global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, sustainability, and digital inclusion and the role of law in facilitating and guiding that use, while ensuring society is protected from potential harm caused by the more radical and disruptive technologies.

The programme is suitable for law graduates with an interest in technology law - an emerging and increasingly important area of legal practice, and also for non-law graduates who seek corporate employment with a focus on the regulation of technology.

Teaching, Learning, and Assessment

Teaching on the programme will typically involve a combination of formal workshop styled seminars, group discussions, directed reading and personal research. Case study analysis and discussion is used to contextualise learning and the application of techniques.

You will also work in small groups which encourages participative learning, provides experience of working with people from different cultures, and helps develop organisational skills. As your confidence with the material and research skills increase, you will be expected to work more independently and lead sessions either alone or within a group.

There are no timed, closed book examinations for this programme. Instead, we use a variety of programme work assignments to develop and test their research, critical thinking, problem solving and writing skills. You might therefore be asked to write a traditional academic essay, to create a portfolio of activities, to write a book review or develop a research plan. The type of assessment for each module will be specified in the module descriptor with more detail being available in the module handbook.
