Cyber Security MSc

Course Overview

The Cyber Security MSc is designed for graduates with a computer science background who wish to broaden their skills, or for computing professionals who wish to move into cyber security. The course is ideal for those seeking a broad understanding of cyber security without specialising in a specific domain.

What You'll Study

The course has four compulsory common modules shared across the four MSc courses. Each course has its own additional specialist 30-credit module and an optional professional placement.

Modules

  • Network Security and Incident Response - 30 credits
    • Gain the knowledge and skills to secure network infrastructures and understand incident response.
    • Cover network security architecture, firewalls, intrusion detection, wireless security, network monitoring, and risk management.
  • Cloud Infrastructure and Operations - 30 credits
    • Gain a comprehensive understanding of cloud computing principles, technologies, and best practices.
    • Learn about emerging cloud technologies and cloud operations.
    • Cover operating systems, cloud platforms, virtualization, monitoring, and DevOps.
  • Security of Connected Systems - 30 credits
    • This module gives you an appreciation of how cyber security principles apply to connected systems like IoT and automotive.
    • Cover trends in interconnected systems, mobile communication technologies, common communication protocols (like MQTT), automotive security, legal and ethical factors related to data from connected devices, security policy, and the emerging threat landscape.
  • Master's with Professional Placement
    • If you successfully secure a placement in industry within your first semester, this master's with professional placement option allows you to extend your 12-month master's course up to an additional year to complete the placement before starting your final 60-credit module.
  • Individual Project - 60 credits
    • Cover the essential stages of research, from conceptualisation to dissemination.
    • Learn about different research designs, data collection methods, and analysis techniques.
    • Examine the importance of ethical research practices and effective time management.

Specialist Modules

  • Cyber Security MSc
    • Applied Theory of Cyber-Security and Secure Design - 30 credits
      • Gain a deep understanding of cyber security theory, cryptographic methods, and how to evaluate system security.
  • Cyber Security (Digital Forensics) MSc
    • Digital Forensics - 30 credits
      • Study the ideas and tools used to investigate cybercrime and analyse digital evidence.
  • Cyber Security (Ethical Hacking) MSc
    • Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing - 30 credits
      • Focus on the techniques used to identify flaws in systems, networks, and applications.
  • Cyber Security (Management) MSc
    • Cyber-security Management - 30 credits
      • Focus on the strategic and operational aspects of managing cyber-security within organisations.

How You'll Learn

The course has a strong hands-on component where theoretical knowledge is supported by practical lab activities. Our labs have been designed to address the applied nature of the subject, whilst reinforcing the deep theoretical knowledge required to succeed.

Teaching and learning methods may include:

  • lectures
  • computer laboratory sessions
  • online learning
  • problem-based learning
  • seminars
  • discussions
  • tutorials

Entry Requirements

  • UK: An honours degree 2:2 or above (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline with demonstrable knowledge of programming.
  • International: An honours degree 2:2 or above (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline with demonstrable knowledge of programming.

Fees and Funding

  • EU: £11,200 per year with EU Support Bursary, £18,600 per year without EU Support Bursary
  • International: £18,600

Facilities

Our Ethical hacking and cybersecurity laboratory gives you access to 84 workstations, equipped with a range of open-source security suites and a range of commonly used virtualisation, ethical hacking, and digital forensics tools, alongside a secondary internal network.

You can also improve your skills and understanding of general networking in our CISCO laboratory. Learn to run workstations and servers while also improving your fundamental knowledge.

Careers and Opportunities

On successful completion of this course, you could go on to work in a wide range of roles including security audit, management, network administration, penetration testing, digital forensics and government work.

Graduates of this course have secured positions with:
