Program Overview

Automotive Engineering MEng/BEng (Hons)

Course Overview

Successful graduates of this course should be able to apply their comprehensive understanding of vehicle engineering in a wide variety of roles in the automotive industry and beyond.

What You'll Study

  • Year one: Common first year with related courses, covering mechanical science, manufacturing technology and materials, engineering design, engineering application, engineering mathematics, and electrical and electronic engineering principles.
  • Year two: Vehicle systems and development, design and sustainability, solid mechanics and dynamics, thermofluid mechanics, analytical modelling, and engineering management.
  • Placement year: Optional work placement or international study/work placement.
  • Final year (BEng): Professional development and project planning, individual project, automotive product innovation, automotive powertrain, automotive vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics, and optional modules (finite element analysis and vehicle structures, vehicle refinement, durability and reliability, computational thermofluids, materials analysis and advanced manufacturing, electric vehicle and future transport).
  • Final year (MEng): Engineering strategy and professional practice, individual project proposal, individual project dissertation, further automotive powertrain, automotive vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics, and optional modules (finite element analysis and vehicle structures, vehicle refinement, durability and reliability, computational thermofluids, materials analysis and advanced manufacturing, electric vehicle and future transport).
  • Additional year: Industrial group project proposal, industrial group project dissertation, business innovation and sustainability, and pathway modules (analysis, dynamics, powertrain).

Entry Requirements

  • UK: 120 UCAS points (BEng), 128 UCAS points (MEng), with A-levels in Mathematics and one from Physics, Chemistry, Design Technology, Biology, Further Mathematics, Electronics, Engineering, or BTec Certificate in Engineering.
  • International: IELTS 6.0 overall (with at least 5.5 in each component area).

Fees and Funding

  • UK, Ireland, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man: 2026/27 fees TBC, 2025/26 fees £9,535 per year (BEng), £19,850 per year (MEng).
