Course Overview

The Children and Young People's Nursing BSc (Hons) course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become a professional children and young people's nurse. The course combines theory and practical learning with practice-based learning to lead students towards professional registration and a rewarding career as a children and young people's nurse.

This course is accredited and recognized by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).

Course Structure

The course is divided into three years, with each year consisting of modules that cover various aspects of children and young people's nursing.

Year One

• Becoming a Professional Practitioner - 20 credits
• Evidence: Your Profession in a Global Context - 20 credits
• Nursing Assessment and Care Delivery - 20 credits
• Understanding Influences on Health and Care - 20 credits
• Placement 1: Introduction to Nursing Care - 20 credits
• Placement 2: Delivering Nursing Care - 20 credits

Year Two

• Therapeutic Interventions and Innovations in Children and Young People's Nursing - 20 credits
• Complex Decision-Making with the Children and Young People's Nursing Environments - 20 credits
• Exploring Knowledge Through Curiosity - 20 credits
• Enhanced Approaches in Delivering Holistic Care - 20 credits
• Placement 3: Delivering Enhanced Nursing Care - 20 credits
• Placement 4: Delivering Complex Holistic Nursing Care - 20 credits

Year Three

• Complex Care Coordination in Children and Young People's Nursing - 20 credits
• Leading for the Future as a Health and Care Professional - 20 credits
• The Evidence-based Practitioner: Professional Project - 20 credits
• Preparing for your Career in Nursing - 20 credits
• Placement 5: Coordinating Nursing Care - 20 credits
• Placement 6: Practising Autonomously - 20 credits

Entry Requirements

• UK: 120 UCAS points, BBB - excludes General Studies, GCSE maths, English and one science at grade 4 / C or Functional Skills Level 2
• BTEC: DDM in a Health, Sport or Science-based subject
• IB Diploma: 32 points with 14 at Higher Level
• Access to HE: The Access to HE Diploma in Health or Science subject to include 33 Level 3 credits at Distinction and 12 at Merit in Health units, plus GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above

Fees and Funding

• UK students: £9,535 per year
• A non-repayable grant of £5,000 and extra payments worth up to £3,000 may be available to eligible students for each year of study

Facilities

• The Alison Gingell Building features mock hospital wards built to NHS standards, an operating theatre, critical care settings, and other real-life nursing environments.
• Community houses for learning how to work with patients outside of a hospital setting

Careers and Opportunities

• Graduates can apply for registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)
• Career opportunities include specialist practitioner, advanced nurse practitioner, consultant nurse, educator, or manager roles
• Graduates can work in various settings, including acute hospitals, specialist services, hospices, community services, or the private and independent healthcare sector

Additional Information

• Caring experience, either paid or voluntary, is essential
• Students will be subject to satisfactory health clearance and enhanced criminal record disclosure
• Placements are provided at the placement provider's discretion
• The University is unable to guarantee the provision of placements or the location and type of placement offered
