History of Chinese Dance

Course Description

This course provides an in-depth understanding of the historical, cultural, and artistic significance of Chinese dance from ancient to contemporary times.

Course Objectives

• A comprehensive overview of the evolution of Chinese dance, covering important periods, styles, and famous figures
• Explore the cultural and social contexts that have shaped Chinese dance in different eras
• Emphasize the influence of Chinese dance on traditional and modern performing arts

Course Content

• Dynastic evolution: the changes in dance styles during the Western Zhou, Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with a focus on the role of dance in court and folk traditions
• Contemporary Chinese Dance: analysis of modern adaptations and fusion styles of the 20th and 21st centuries, looking at contemporary dance groups and cross-cultural influences

• Basic understanding of the history and cultural importance of Chinese dance
• Appreciation of the artistry and diversity of Chinese dance traditions
• Knowledge about the evolving role of dance in Chinese society and its global impact
