  • Maternal and Newborn Care (Part 2): Develops your knowledge and understanding of public health, health promotion, health protection, and safeguarding strategies underpinning safe, effective, personalized, holistic, and universal evidence-based care in midwifery practice.
  • Realizing Professionalism in Midwifery: Develops your knowledge and understanding of professionalism and how this underpins midwifery practice.
  • Anatomy and Physiology Applied to the Childbirth Continuum: Develops your knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, and genetic development of the human body from conception onwards.
  • Interprofessional Research & Innovation: Develops your understanding of the evidence-based principles of research, service improvement, and innovation in trans-professional practice.
  • Emergency Skills for Midwifery Care: Develops your knowledge and understanding of additional skills needed for women, birthing people, neonates, and families during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods.
  • Complexity of Maternal Care (Part 1): Develops your knowledge and understanding of providing safe and effective universal and additional midwifery care through increased complexity.
  • Complexity of Maternal Care (Part 2): Develops your knowledge and understanding of health protection strategies underpinning safe and effective universal and additional care through increased complexity.

  • Numeracy Competency for Registration: Consolidates previous learning related to numeracy, drug calculations, and medicines management.
  • Advanced Skills for Midwifery Care: Develops your knowledge and understanding of advancing additional care needs in midwifery practice.
  • Critical Perspectives in Maternity Care: Develops your critical knowledge and understanding of providing safe and effective universal and additional midwifery care.
  • The Professional, Autonomous, Accountable Midwife: Develops your knowledge and understanding of professionalism and how this underpins midwifery practice.
  • Newborn and Infant Physical Examination: Develops your knowledge and skills to effectively undertake and be proficient in conducting the full systematic examination of the newborn.

  • Simulated learning experiences encompass various levels of fidelity, Augmented Reality (AR)/Virtual Reality (VR), and classroom-based learning.
  • Creative health resources and arts-based approaches like dance and role play enrich the simulation process, enhancing students' understanding and reflection on clinical practice.

Beyond the Classroom

  • You'll spend time out on placement where you'll apply what you have learned to real families experiencing midwifery care in a range of different settings.

    • Access requirements: Access to HE Diploma; to include 45 credits at Level 3, 15 of which must be at Distinction and 30 at Merit
    • OCR: OCR National Extended/Diploma: Merit/distinction profile plus GCE A Level
    • Extra Information/General Entry Requirements: Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced and A Level General Studies will be recognised in our offer. We will also consider a combination of A Levels and BTECs/OCRs. Applicants must also have GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths. We accept Level 2 Key Skills/Functional Skills as an equivalent to GCSE Maths and English. Please note that applicants must also have evidence of recent study within the last five years.
    • Safeguarding/Suitability: All successful candidates who receive an offer of a place for this course and choose the University of Chester as their Firm choice will be required to undergo checks with regards to their suitability to practice.
  • International Students: This course is not open to international students.

Fees and Funding

  • Additional Costs: A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is carried out on all students. Applicants to pre-registration Midwifery are required to subscribe to the DBS update service.
  • Bursaries: The University of Chester supports fair access for students who may need additional support through a range of bursaries and scholarships.
