Museums and Heritage Practice MSc
Overview
The MSc in Museums and Heritage Practice is a postgraduate program that explores the theory and practice of museums and heritage studies. The program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work in the museum and heritage sector, or to pursue advanced research in the field.

Module Descriptions
Advanced Research Skills
This module examines the skills and methodologies required for advanced archaeological, historical, and heritage research. Students will gain the opportunity to explore a range of skills and to build on their existing knowledge and expertise.
Critical Perspectives on the Past
This module provides an advanced-level introduction and engagement with current theoretical and applied debates on the meaning of the human past and its significance in today's world.
Museum Collections Management and Object Care
This module explores museum studies in theory (museology) and practice, providing an advanced introduction and analysis of current debates around collections management.
Sustainable Heritage Practice
This module explores the identification and cultural significance of archaeological, built, and cultural heritage sites, by analyzing key concepts in the research, preservation, management, and interpretation of heritage in local, national, and international frameworks.
Professional Project
This module offers experiential learning opportunities in the form of bespoke placements, or experiential or research projects that are embedded in professional practice.
Research Dissertation
Each student researches and writes a 12,000-word dissertation on a historical, archaeological, museum, or heritage-related topic of their choosing.
Entry Requirements
- A 2:2 honors degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent qualification is required.
- Prior experience in the museum and heritage sectors can be taken into account alongside academic qualifications.

Fees and Funding
- Home Students: £8,775 for a full-time course (2025/26)
- International Students: £15,000 for a full-time course (2025/26)
- Additional Costs: Please note that your course will involve additional costs not covered by your tuition fees.
Careers and Employability
The University has an award-winning Careers and Employability service which provides a variety of employability-enhancing experiences. The program is based at Exton Park, Chester, which is close to the city center and offers modern learning resources and library facilities, fitness facilities, student services, chapel, chaplaincy, and multi-faith spaces, accommodation, and catering options.
