Secondary Art and Design (Lead School Partner Route) PGCE with QTS

Overview

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to become an outstanding teacher. The University of Chester offers Art and Design (11-16 with sixth form enhancement) as a subject specialism leading to the award PGCE with QTS. Course Structure

The course is designed to ensure students are confident in all basic national curriculum requirements. It includes:


  • Year 1: Critical understanding of pedagogy, assessment, and curriculum; critical knowledge, understanding, and skills in specialist age phases and subjects; critical knowledge and understanding of wider professional issues; enrichment opportunities; 120 days of school-based learning in a minimum of two schools.

  • Becoming a Teacher: the Professional Transformation: Develops students' commitment to inclusivity, well-being, and safeguarding of children; understanding of the nature and aims of the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage; understanding of legislative and statutory frameworks; knowledge and understanding of inclusion; knowledge of how to generate motivation, autonomy, mutual respect, and positive relationships with pupils.
  • Becoming a Teacher: Meeting the Teachers' Standards: Develops students' management of their own professional learning; ability to plan for inclusion, safeguarding, respect for diversity, and demonstrate professional behaviors; understanding of the nature and aims of the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage; understanding of legislative and statutory frameworks; knowledge and understanding of inclusion.
  • Professional Knowledge in Secondary Education: Covers important legislative and statutory frameworks; issues of race and gender identification; promotion of good behavior and a positive orientation to learning; nature and aims of the secondary National Curriculum; principles of professionalism and professional behaviors.
  • Enriching the Teacher: Involves students in activities aimed at developing their professional perspectives on teaching; introduces them to broader horizons in the practice of education; reflects on the value of these activities in promoting and enhancing learning.
  • Building Knowledge for Teaching: Enables students to establish, track, and develop their fundamental knowledge for teaching in English, Maths, and Science.
  • Learning to teach: Developing Critical Perspectives on the Teaching of the Specialist Subject: Develops students' understanding of how all pupils learn the specialist subject; relates this to key concepts in teaching and learning; develops critical perspectives on the teaching of the specialist subject.
  • Subject Curriculum, Pedagogy and Professional Enquiry: Develops students' understanding of pedagogical and curriculum concepts; relates them critically to the specialist subject; develops students' planning of sequences of lessons.

Entry Requirements

  • Home Students: Hold or be expected to gain a minimum of a 2:2 honors degree; have GCSE grade C/grade 4 in English and Mathematics.
  • International Students: Hold or be expected to gain a minimum of a 2:2 honors degree; have GCSE grade C/grade 4 in English and Mathematics; meet English language requirements (IELTS 7.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in each band).
