Course Aims
The course aims to support mathematics associate teachers to:
- Develop an understanding of the theories and principles of learning in mathematics
- Interrogate current pedagogies in mathematics education and explore how they can be used in the classroom
- Engage in the issues and debates about learning and teaching in mathematics
- Develop an understanding of curriculum planning in mathematics and the ways in which teachers can contribute to the design of an engaging curriculum
- Understand assessment of, and for, learning in mathematics
- Understand and develop strategies that promote progress and provide all pupils with the opportunity to meet expectations
- Reflect on, and refine their own teaching
Module Content
The course consists of several modules, including:
- Becoming a Teacher: the Professional Transformation
- Develops an understanding of the nature and aims of the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage
- Covers important elements of the legislative and statutory framework relevant to teaching, education, and the professional responsibilities of teachers
- Develops knowledge of how to generate motivation, autonomy, mutual respect, and positive relationships with staff and pupils
- Becoming a Teacher: Meeting the Teachers' Standards
- Develops an understanding of the nature and aims of the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage
- Covers important elements of the legislative and statutory framework relevant to teaching, education, and the professional responsibilities of teachers
- Develops knowledge of how to plan sequences of lessons that enable the progression of all pupils

- Covers important legislative and statutory frameworks that teachers must know and understand
- Develops an understanding of the nature and aims of the secondary National Curriculum

Entry Requirements
- Home Students:
- Hold or be expected to gain a minimum of a 2:2 honors degree
- Have GCSE grade C/grade 4 in English and Mathematics
- International Students:
- Hold or be expected to gain a minimum of a 2:2 honors degree
- Have Level 3 Mathematics (equivalent) at grade C or above
- Meet English language requirements (IELTS 7.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in each band)
