Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine MSc

Overview

The Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine MSc is a postgraduate course that develops an advanced understanding of this exciting area of medicine and clinical research. The application of stem cells and new regenerative medicines will help solve major longstanding health problems – for example ageing-related disorders, diseases such as chronic heart disease, arthritis and spinal cord injury.

  • Tissue Formation, Development and Regeneration (20 Credits)
    • Learn about developmental processes that are key to the amazing phenomenon of tissue regeneration.
    • Hands-on laboratory sessions with cutting-edge vertebrate or invertebrate models.
  • Emerging Molecular Therapies in Medicine (20 Credits)
    • Learn about transformative methodologies like CAR-T therapy, RNA interference (RNAi), CRISPR gene editing, monoclonal antibodies, and small-molecule inhibitors.
    • Hands-on CRISPR gRNA design workshop.
  • Modelling Molecular Interactions (20 Credits)
    • Investigate a gene of interest, unlocking its role within a specific differentiation pathway or regenerative process.
    • Bioinformatics-based approach to assess the conservation of your gene of interest across animals.
  • Applied Molecular Biology (20 Credits)
    • Theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory experience in key techniques in molecular biology.
    • Laboratory work, including bioinformatics, DNA extractions, DNA electrophoresis, nucleic acid quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques.
  • Research and Analytical Skills (20 Credits)
    • Introduced to scientific research, including descriptive, analytical & experimental research.
    • Learn about the building blocks of scientific research: scientific language, ethical considerations and experimental design.
  • In Vitro and In Vivo Models in Medicine (20 Credits)
    • Unlock an advanced understanding of the amazing potential of stem cell research and regenerative medicine to transform clinical conditions.
    • Hands-on experiences with various models (fish, amphibians, avians, mammals).

Optional Module

  • Research Dissertation (60 Credits)
    • Undertake an original research project in an area of relevance to your course and which interests you.
    • Communicate your project's outcomes in the most relevant forms.
