Applied Sports Performance – MSc

Course Overview

The MSc in Applied Sports Performance prepares successful graduates for a career in sports performance through a focus on areas such as human performance, skill acquisition, performance analysis, sports and exercise nutrition, and domestic and international placement within an applied sporting environment. This one year full time or two year part time programme provides state of the art facilities and a highly experienced programme team to ensure that the scientific and applied nature of sports performance is to the forefront of the student’s experience.


Entry Requirements

  • A minimum 2.2 honours bachelor’s degree (Level 8) in a cognate discipline
  • A minimum 2.2 honours bachelor’s degree (Level 8) in a non-cognate discipline with considerable experience and/or ability, evidenced by an RPL portfolio of prior experience and learning.
  • Equivalent Qualifications. Applicants with equivalent qualifications on the European and International frameworks will also be considered. International students must evidence a proficiency in English language for example IELTS 6.5
  • Recognition of Prior Learning: TUS recognises the importance of providing access to education and providing lifelong learning opportunities.

    • Develop a comprehensive understanding of effective conditioning strategies to enhance athletic performance.
  • Sports Technology & Performance Analysis
    • Credits: 10
    • Provides a comprehensive understanding of the practical application of technology in the context of sports performance.
  • Sports & Exercise Nutrition
    • Credits: 5
    • Provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of nutrition in athletic performance and its application in optimising training and recovery.
  • Skill Acquisition
    • Credits: 5
    • The advancement of knowledge and application of the individual’s acquisition of skills through the prism of motor control and learning theories.

Semester 2

  • Athlete Welfare & Management
    • Credits: 10
    • To provide a critical awareness and ability to analyse athlete welfare and contemporary issues as they relate to sport in an overarching “performance management” role.
  • Placement
    • Credits: 10
    • Application of the formal education within an applied sports performance and learning environment.
  • Applied Research Methods
    • Credits: 5
    • To develop students’ research competencies, particularly those relating to collecting and analysing both qualitative and quantitative data types.
  • Coaching Psychology
    • Credits: 5
    • Interrogation of the literature surrounding the psychology of coaching through the comprehension of the self a central construct.

Semester 3

  • Research Thesis
    • Credits: 30
    • Encourages the development of an integrative approach to learning and critical thinking through bringing together a range of concepts, theories, frameworks and practices within a research setting.
