ICMS and BIM for Quantity Surveyors (Micro-Credential, L8, 5 ECTS)
Course Overview
This programme aimed at construction professionals, is designed to provide learners with key knowledge and insights necessary for the successful adoption of the International Cost Management Standard, ICMS. Learners will be provided with key insights into the standard, with relevance to ARM4 and other measurement standards all enabled by Building Information Modelling.
ICMS3 has introduced Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) as a fundamental component of construction measurement. Accurate generation of carbon assessments remains a challenging domain. This will provide learners with solid foundation of the principles of WLCA, as well as the requirements, rules and techniques necessary for the ICMS implementation.
Entry Requirements
- An honours degree (level 8) in a cognate (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.) discipline or approved equivalent qualification
- A level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.,) or approved equivalent qualification, with 1-year relevant work experience
- Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) - Please review the academic entry requirements for this programme. If you do not hold these qualifications but would like your application to be assessed under RPL please select YES on the online application form.
HCI Pillar 3 Funding
Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the HCI Pillar 3 funding, as set out by the HEA. We would encourage you to read the criteria prior to making an application, to ensure you are eligible to apply.
English Language Requirements
Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

- Introduction to ICMS: Objectives, Scope, Structure, Cost Groups, Lifecycle Costs
- ICMS Uses: Benchmarking, Cost Classifications, Claims Analysis, WBS, Limitations
- ICMS v Elemental Cost Planning Classification Principles, Delineation, Structural, Alignment to Design disciplines
- Introduction to ISO19650 BIM Principles Current Technologies, CDE, BIM Take-off, Data Structures
Delivery
- Online with lectures and practical sessions in an online, virtual classroom 1 evening (3 hours) per week (Wednesdays, 6:30pm to 9:30pm) commencing Wednesday 17th September 2025.
- Lectures are recorded and available for listen back.
Time Commitment
- Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.
Assessment
- Assessments are designed with tiered activities of varying difficulty. These are individual assessments, however peer collaboration is actively encouraged. Coursework assessments include two practical assignments.
