Program Overview


Course Overview

The aim of this module is to enable students to specify, detail, and apply parts of the current building regulations, Technical Guidance Documents TGD’s, and the Eurocodes for fabric and fire compliance, in a way that is applicable and/or enable dispensations and relaxations for the renovation of traditional buildings in Ireland. Consideration of sustainable material choices, workmanship, fire safety, and permitted access to this type of building will be covered.


Entry Requirements

  • An honours degree (level 8) in a cognate (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.) discipline or approved equivalent qualification
  • A level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.,) or approved equivalent qualification, with 1-year relevant work experience
  • Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) – Assessment

HCI Pillar 3 Funding

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the HCI Pillar 3 funding, as set out by the HEA.


English Language Requirement

Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required.


Course Content

Module: Traditional Building Regulation Fabric Compliance (10 credits)

  1. Application of Technical Guidance Documents, TGDs to traditional construction types with specific focus on the fabric of the build, fire safety, and access to buildings.
  2. Traditional construction typologies and adaptability in Ireland
  3. Implications on the integrity of the build in relation to fabric changes and fire.
  4. Renovation compliance requirements in traditional building stock – theory and technical background
  5. Application of alternative TGD details for building regulation compliance when renovating the fabric and structure of traditional buildings
  6. Application of alternative TGD details for building regulation compliance, associated with fire and access requirements for traditional buildings
  7. Use of digital tools and software for demonstrating and analysing alternative details for traditional construction.

Time Commitment

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.

Assessment

  • Assessment will be through a range of continuous assessments, which will involve:
    • Case studies,
    • Online Quizzes
    • Project reports

Qualification

  • Traditional Building Regulation Fabric Compliance (L8, 10 ECTS) Micro Credential

Fees

  • €1,250 *HCI Pilar 3 funding – Student pays €250
