Course Overview

The aim of the Certificate in Building Regulation Compliance for Traditional Buildings programme is to address the challenging roles and responsibilities associated with building regulations for the renovation of traditional buildings (pre 1940s) and to up-skill building professionals to develop knowledge and skills that allow them to design, deliver and approve compliant traditional buildings.

Entry Requirements

• An honours degree (level 8) in a cognate (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.) discipline or approved equivalent qualification
• A level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.,) or approved equivalent qualification, with 1-year relevant work experience.
• Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) - Please review the academic entry requirements for this programme. If you do not hold these qualifications but would like your application to be assessed under RPL please select YES on the online application form.

HCI Pillar 3 Funding

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the HCI Pillar 3 funding, as set out by the HEA. We would encourage you to read the criteria prior to making an application, to ensure you are eligible to apply.

English Language Requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required.

Course Content

• Traditional Building Regulation Energy Compliance – 5 credits
  • Application of Technical Guidance Documents Part L, J and F to traditional construction types in Ireland
  • Introduction to standard Technical Guidance Documents
  • Traditional construction types in Ireland
  • Energy upgrades in traditional building stock – theory and technical background
  • Application of alternative details for building regulation compliance to Parts L, J and F
  • Use of digital tools and software for demonstrating alternative details for traditional construction.
• Traditional Building Regulation Fabric Compliance – 10 credits
  • Application of Technical Guidance Documents to traditional construction types with specific focus on the fabric of the build, fire safety, and access to buildings.
  • Traditional construction typologies and adaptability in Ireland
  • Implications on the integrity of the build in relation to fabric changes and fire.
  • Renovation compliance requirements in traditional building stock – theory and technical background
  • Application of alternative TGD details for building regulation compliance when renovating the fabric and structure of traditional buildings
  • Application of alternative TGD details for building regulation compliance, associated with fire and access requirements for traditional buildings
  • Use of digital tools and software for demonstrating and analysing alternative details for traditional construction

Delivery

• Evening On-line lectures – 2 hours contact weekly – Wed & Thurs
• Lectures are recorded for listen back.

Time Commitment

• Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.

Assessment

• Assessment will be through a range of continuous assessments, which will involve:
  • Case studies
  • Online Quizzes
  • Project reports

Qualification

• Certificate in Building Regulation Compliance for Traditional Buildings (Certificate, L8, 15 ECTS)

Fees

• €1,900 – HCI Pilar 3 funding – Student pays €380

Application Deadline

• 15th August 2025. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis, prioritizing unemployed and returning applicants. Course will be closed once the maximum number of applicants is reached. Courses run subject to viable numbers.
