Foundations of Nutrition for Health and Fitness (Certificate, L7, 10 ECTS)

Course Overview

The Aim of the Programme, specifically designed for firefighters, first responders and emergency personnel is to provide the knowledge and application of Good Nutrition Practices to


  • Optimise Physical and Mental Performance
  • Support the Immune System
  • Enhance Resilience to Stress and
  • Maintain Long Term Health and Well-being

All of which are essential for effectively fulfilling demanding roles in emergency situations.


Entry Requirements

  • Candidates should possess a Level 6 qualification in a relevant area.
  • Applicants who do not meet these requirements but who are aged 23 and over will be considered for entry by interview.

Module Outline

Content

  • Module Content

This module provides the learner with the scientific principles and practical applications of human nutrition for general good health and optimising physical performance. The sources, functions and digestion of macro and micro nutrients together with the concept of healthy eating will be explored. This module also provides learners with an understanding of hydration and the non-nutrient components (including alcohol) of food and drink and will explore the measurement of nutritional requirements and energy balance.


Delivery

  • The below is an indicative delivery schedule.

This programme will be delivered online over a period of 12 weeks (2 hours per week – live, evening time) on Thursdays from 8-10pm commencing Thursday 18th September 2025.


Time Commitment

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

Assessment

  • 100% Continuous Assessment consisting of 3 (10%) MCQs (ongoing) and an Individual Project worth 70%

  • Certificate in Foundations of Nutrition for Health and Fitness (Special Purpose Award, Level 7, 10 Credits)

  • €1,250

Application Deadline

  • Wednesday 3rd September 2025 Places are allocated on a first come first served basis. Course will be closed once the maximum number of applicants is reached. Courses run subject to viable numbers.

Further Opportunities

  • Further Study: While this is a Special Purpose Award (SPA) learners could apply for relevant exemptions on similar modules contained in a full level 7 programme.
