Program Overview
Bachelor of Science in Biology
Program Overview
The Bachelor of Science (BSc) Major in Biology program will equip students for graduate study, health professional and teacher certification programs, or jobs in industry, government, or academic research. Central to this program is the provision of a lab-intensive experience where students learn first-hand the appropriate use of equipment and techniques to investigate living organisms and how they function.
Upper-level courses build upon the core knowledge and skills developed in first and second year, allowing the exploration of more advanced biological concepts and practical techniques. This culminates in a community-focused research or directed studies project which requires students to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned.
The full program is offered at the Surrey campus, first and second year courses are offered on the Richmond campus, and select first year courses are offered on the Langley campus.

Why Study Biology?
Biology is the science of life. Do you enjoy learning about the different levels of biology such as cells, organisms, and populations?
With a degree in biology, you will be ready to make a positive contribution in your community that has global relevance. Our multidisciplinary and hands-on learning approach will help you gain skills ranging from gene editing to understanding ecosystems and climate change.
Who Studies Biology?
This degree program will appeal to individuals with a passionate interest in living organisms and how they function. Whether entering from high school, other post-secondary institutions, or returning from the workforce to study, this program will appeal to anyone who shares a concern for the future of humanity and the welfare of our planet and who is seeking a career that can make a difference.
Students who are successful in this program are likely to be self-motivated, have a strong work ethic, and have well-developed oral and written communication skills.
Career Outcomes
According to the latest BC Labour market outlook, the Biologist and related scientists job categories are listed amongst the highest opportunity occupations in BC. As the impacts of climate change continue to become more evident, there will be a greater need for documenting and understanding the functions of ecosystems to mitigate the most severe impacts of a changing climate. Moreover, continuous technical advances in biological science tools such as CRISPR/CAS-based gene editing and genome sequencing/analysis will transform our traditional economy into a sustainable bioeconomy. The multidisciplinary KPU Biology program provides students with the knowledge and hands-on skill development in order to be successful in gaining employment or to continue their education into fields such as: medicine, biotechnology, computational biology, neuroscience, amongst many others. Moreover, the BC College of Applied Biology has accredited the KPU B.Sc. in Biology program which will fast track our graduates to immediately become Biologist in Training right after graduation or Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with more than three years of work experience.
Research Opportunities
The KPU biology program has several opportunities for applied research and learning. Please reach out to our instructors for research opportunities.
Honours Coursework
BIOL 4990
Honours Thesis Project 1
Students registered in the B.Sc. (Honours), Major in Biology program will design and propose a research project that will be conducted in BIOL 4995 under the supervision of a KPU faculty member with expertise relating to the research topic. Students will learn to organize an advisory committee, develop and present a full research proposal for approval, conduct pilot work as needed, obtain ethics approval where relevant, and prepare a knowledge dissemination plan. Students will also review and provide feedback on research proposals of their colleagues. NOTE: This course is available to Honours Program students only.
BIOL 4995
Honours Thesis Project 2
Honours candidates will perform a research project designed in BIOL 4990. Under the direct supervision of a KPU faculty member, students will apply scientific principles and methodology in a creative hands-on research experience. Upon completion of the research project, students will construct and present a formal research report and presentation. Opportunity will be given for students to disseminate findings of their research project. NOTE: This course is available to Honours Program students only.
