Description
Gain technology-centric research and development skills at one of the nation’s top ocean engineering schools, as ranked by College Factual and College Gazette.
Ocean engineering is a growing and evolving field with a variety of career paths, including marine administration, naval architecture and environmental studies.
At Stevens, you’ll engage in applied research with some of the top faculty in ocean engineering, working on projects related to pressing issues like predicting extreme weather, mapping currents, protecting communities against environmental hazards and enhancing port performance.
Because Stevens houses one of the only ocean engineering programs in the northeast, our graduates are highly sought-after by organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Office of Naval Research and Lockheed Martin.
The Stevens Advantage: Widen Your Career Options
With a projected shortage of engineers through 2030, now is the time to get your engineering degree. But to compete in today’s career climate, graduates must adapt to rapidly-evolving technologies impacting all corners of the job market, like generative AI. At Stevens, you’ll learn the in-demand skills you need to fill the talent gap. Our core curriculum – infused with AI electives and hands-on education opportunities – develops the deep expertise, critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and entrepreneurial savvy required to thrive in a technologically disrupted marketplace.
Our Hoboken, N.J., location gives access to the living laboratory that is the New York Harbor and New Jersey coast. On campus, you’ll benefit from Stevens’ array of national research partnerships and work in renowned labs and facilities like the Davidson Laboratory for experimental marine hydrodynamics.

Skills & Experience
- Stevens gave me the unique opportunity to blend my civil and environmental engineering background and my passion for the coast. I did research in coastal engineering which is not offered at many other schools in the area, and studied ferry wakes in the Hudson River while monitoring sediment movement on a beach. I was involved in field work collecting data with a variety of marine instruments.
- The Ocean Engineering program at Stevens is committed to the student’s success. The faculty works with students to identify their interests and sets them on a path where they are able to learn and grow within the field. Students who are looking to be apart of one of the nation’s leading Ocean Engineering Departments should definitely choose Stevens to continue their education.
Internships
- Stevens, for the past decade, has been producing cutting edge research techniques involving climate change and the coastline. It has been neat to be a part of a program that is doing so much beneficial work for the surrounding coastal communities. This year, I hope to publish my research on the New Jersey Wave Climate and participate in an internship at a Coastal Engineering firm.
Cooperative Education
- During my master’s research I obtained my FAA Remote Pilot Certification to be able to use drones to collect ariel topography data. In doing so I gained a lot of experience using drones in the marine environment, which qualified me for an internship with the USACE’s Field Research Facility.
