Overview

This course is a one-year top-up programme designed to enable students from foundation degrees in Mechanical Engineering to obtain a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering Design. It provides an education in mechanical engineering, producing graduates who have the necessary range of skills and depth of understanding to successfully pursue careers as Incorporated Engineers working in the industry.


A distinguishing feature of this programme is its practical and mechanical emphasis, derived from local industries and staff expertise. Graduates of the course should be able to work effectively in the industry as part of design, development or research teams with the necessary skills to turn concepts into drawings and through to the manufacturing and assembly processes.

How and When to Pay

  • Tuition fee instalments for the semester are due by the Monday of week 1 of each semester.
  • Students are not liable for full fees for that semester if they leave before week 4. If the leaving date is after week 4, full fees for the semester are payable.

How to Apply

Entry Requirements

  • Specific entry requirements:
    • Foundation Degree (Engineering) in Mechanical Engineering from Solihull College
    • Foundation Degrees from other Universities or Colleges will be admitted if their modules are equivalent and accepted on application.
  • Qualification requirements:
    • Foundation Degree in Engineering - 55% average module mark OR
    • Pearson HND - Overall Merit profile
  • For entry into the top up BEng (Hons) course, there must be a minimum of 240 credits in a relevant subject such as Engineering/Mathematics and/or Science disciplines.
  • Other qualifications and combinations of qualifications will be considered and maybe also acceptable.

English Language Requirements

  • Please see the University's standard English language requirements.

International Applications

  • International students will normally have to study full-time unless they have full-time employment within the UK. For September 2017 entry, this course is not available to international students requiring a Tier 4 visa.
