Overview

Our joint honours course allows you to pursue your own areas of interest within Geography and History whilst also providing you with a solid foundation in both disciplines and a range of personal and professional skills which will serve as a springboard for your future career development. The programme is carefully designed to enable you to gradually develop your knowledge and skills and become autonomous, effective and independent learners.

Geography is the study of space, place, society and environment and the ways in which they interconnect. It encourages holistic thinking across social and natural sciences, arts and humanities. History is about far more than studying the past. It enables you to discover why people act the way they do and to explore how societies develop.

Links between research and undergraduate teaching are an important and distinctive feature of the programme, and the combined research experience and competencies of staff have shaped its design, content and delivery.

Learning and Assessment

• Year 1: Acquire skills like river surveying, geomorphological mapping, and interviewing. Learn about sustainability and sustainable development. Develop core historical skills while studying topics ranging from the beginnings of Europe’s colonisation of the rest of the world to more recent debates on race and the environment.
• Year 2: Examine global challenges like environmental hazards, disasters, environmental change, geopolitics, the carbon cycle, or heritage management. Explore more specialist historical issues, like what the Jack the Ripper case tells us about the Victorians, or how thinkers like Charles Darwin have influenced our culture.
• Year 3: Focus on what you care about most, including your dissertation topic. Examine changing oceans and marine pollution, or desertification and deforestation. Explore a wide range of topics such as the future of urban life, our cultural relationship to nature, life in Renaissance Italy, or the fall of the Russian monarchy.

Field Trips

• Joint honours Geography students are required to take a residential field trip as part of the compulsory module 'Advanced Research Skills in Geography'.
• The University covers the field trip costs for flights, local transit and accommodation (half board). Additional costs which the students will need to cover themselves are lunches, dinners and other personal costs (for 6 to 7 days).

Assessment

• Assessment methods used on this course: Diverse assessments that support different learning styles, including writing a blog, creating a video diary or giving a presentation, writing essays, literature reviews or position papers, producing short presentations and working in groups.
• The assessments are designed to help you develop your confidence in using a wide range of skills, preparing you well for your future career.

After You Graduate

• Career prospects: Develop highly transferable skills and competencies in the areas that employers care about, including critical thinking, creative problem solving, written, spoken and visual communication, intercultural and interpersonal understanding, research and analysis, working independently and collaboratively.
• Our graduates go on to work in diverse areas like NGOs and charities, social work, publishing, public relations, marketing, teaching, media and journalism, the civil service. Many pursue postgraduate study, often here at Oxford Brookes.
