Overview

Throughout this Professional Nurse Advocate module, learners will develop an understanding of facilitating the A-equip (Advocating and Educating for QUality ImProvement) model in practice (NHSE, 2021). This model will support practitioners to deliver a high standard of care through quality improvement processes, staff development, education and leadership to facilitate the wellbeing of themselves and those around them.

This module will equip registered nurses with the skills and knowledge to prepare them for the transition into professional nurse advocate role.

How to Apply

Entry Requirements

• Registered with the NMC and practicing at Band 5 or above in an NHS or NHS commissioned service
• At least 1 year post registration qualification
• Have signed support from practice area PNA lead that the role is required and local requirements are met
• Access to a qualified PNA supervisor within the employing organisation (NHSE)
• Evidence of having studied and passed level 6.

Fees quoted are for the first year only. If you are studying a course that lasts longer than one year your fees will increase each year.

How and When to Pay

Tuition fee instalments for the semester are due by the Monday of week 1 of each semester. Students are not liable for full fees for that semester if they leave before week 4. If the leaving date is after week 4, full fees for the semester are payable.

Learning and Assessment

The teaching, learning and assessment offers learners an opportunity to engage with each of the module learning outcomes and to demonstrate achievement of the Oxford Brookes graduate attributes, particularly those concerned with:

Learners will have the opportunity to:

• Attend participatory synchronous seminars and workshops
• Undertake asynchronous learning via moodle and access information via the e-library
• Engage in discussion with peers via forums and within seminars
• Consider diverse perspectives and how care can be improved by engaging with issues of equity, sustainability and social justice
• Reflect on personal experiences related to professional advocacy, quality improvement, educational approaches and developing leadership
• Engage with and discuss concepts, policies, theories and their application to current practice
• Attend group and individual tutorials.

Learning and Teaching

The assessment strategy for this module is designed to assess the learners’ understanding and application of the role of the professional advocate and to equip them to develop this within their own professional practice.

Assessment

Assessment Methods Used on This Course

One critical reflection on an episode of restorative clinical supervision. This can have been undertaken within practice or a simulated environment (500 words - pass/fail).

A 2,500 word quality improvement proposal report, including:

• Background and context for quality improvement project (what is the QI and why is it needed)
• Review of research literature (present the literature that shows the QI project is needed and beneficial)
• Quality improvement outline (the plan)
• Resources (tools training etc)
• QI process used
• Challenges to implementation (resistance and challenges)
• How to ensure success (leadership and education theory)
• Evaluation.
