Program Overview
Teaching Exam Preparation
Acquire techniques for teaching exam preparation skills and how to integrate exam-taking ‘tricks of the trade’ into lesson plans.
Outcomes
Different aspects of teaching are explored with an emphasis on building effective inter-disciplinary teaching in classes. In particular you will:
- Analyse how exams are structured and the purpose of different parts
- Critically reflect on how best to teach the language systems and communication sub-skills that are assessed
- Discuss the best way to use feedback loops and different forms of assessment to improve students’ performance
- Think about how to best exploit published resources and authentic materials in support of exam preparation
Content
Choosing from the modular content on the course the group will explore:
- Teaching techniques to teach examination and study skills communicatively
- Classroom management strategies, for example maintaining engagement and expectations
- Exam taking ‘tricks of the trade’ and how best to integrate them into lessons
- Ways to balance exam preparation and ongoing language improvement

Skimming, scanning, gist and detail, task techniques.
Understanding the global reading and listening papers’ structures.

Understanding instructions and rubrics
Focusing on key words and distractors. Time management.
Wednesday

Teaching of speaking skills
Linking speaking skills in the real world with exam speaking tasks. Guiding students towards understanding the speaking tasks and scoring points.

Preparing lessons that develop speaking skills rather than simply practising speaking. Combining speaking skills with phonology.

Focusing on the writing paper. Overview of the different writing tasks and language focus for specific genres.

Writing techniques, spelling, register, task aim and layout. Methods for implementing writing techniques.

Developing learners’ listening skills.
Methods of providing listening practise and ideas for students to practise listening outside the classroom.

Integrating listening practice in the classroom and combining listening practice with other skills such as reading and writing.

Explaining the overview of the exam and linking this to different types of skills practice tasks. Avoiding exam lessons being overly complex or boring for learners.
