CLIL Interdisciplinary

Overview

This interactive, informative, and practical course is suitable for both English language teachers and those who use English as the language of delivery in other subjects.


Outcomes

  • Critically reflect on your own teaching style and understand alternative teaching styles
  • Analyse how students learn and how to motivate and maintain interest during lessons
  • Develop teaching strategies for the application of core CLIL methodology
  • Understand the challenges around interdisciplinary teaching and scaffolding learning in non-native speaking environments

Content

  • CLIL teaching methodology, for example, the 4Cs and integrated skills work
  • Classroom management strategies, for example, for emergent language, mistakes, and feedback
  • Teaching techniques to effectively balance the development of students' language skills and subject knowledge
  • Materials development – how to best take advantage of textbooks and other sources to create CLIL materials

Sample Schedule

Tuesday

  • 9:00 - 12:10: Errors
    • Styles of classroom error correction such as delayed correction, on-the-spot correction, and whole-class correction
    • A look at how to correct writing, and the use of a 'correction code' to encourage self-correction
  • 12:50 - 15:00: Writing Tasks
    • Designing more meaningful writing tasks that encourage more than students simply "regurgitating" language onto a page
    • Course participants create a loose lesson plan for a 45-minute writing lesson and present their ideas

Wednesday

  • 9:00 - 12:10: CLIL – Content & Language Integrated Learning
    • What does it mean? Why do we do it? What does a CLIL lesson look like?
    • What are the challenges of CLIL and how can we manage them?
  • 12:50 - 15:00: Integrating typical EFL methodologies with CLIL
    • Ensure students are confident with accessing lesson content and getting the most out of lesson materials

Thursday

  • 9:00 - 12:10: Lesson planning
    • Setting the aims and goals of each class, ensuring each activity has a meaningful purpose and communicating this to the students
    • Vocabulary
      • The language used to describe lesson planning and class content in the context of being a teacher
  • 12:50 - 15:00: Syllabus design
    • How to create and compile a course, write course aims, and ensure the course meets the students' aims
    • Analysis of various syllabi, commenting and critiquing them

Friday

  • 9:00 - 12:10: Working with teaching materials and resources
    • Exploiting materials to their full potential and unlocking language and learning opportunities from authentic texts
    • Using exterior resources such as Ted Talks and YouTube in the classroom
  • 12:50 - 15:00: Culture lesson
    • The politics of Britain and the Royal Family
    • A review of this week's content, discussion, and round-up. Questions & Answers
