Pathways provided by the School of Education are suggested schedules. Students may take foundations and methods (EDUG 401-411) courses in any order prior to the teaching seminar and student teaching (EDUG 455 & EDUG 453A/B).

Subject Matter Competency

All teacher candidates in California must demonstrate competency in the subject matter area in which they will be authorized to teach. Subject matter competency must be met in order to apply for student teaching. It can be met through an undergraduate waiver program, examination, college degree, college-level coursework, or through a combination of examination, subject matter program, and college-level coursework in whole or in part, which meet or exceed each of the subject matter domains adopted by the commission in the content area of the credential.


U.S. Constitution Requirement

To be eligible to be recommended for the Preliminary Teaching Credential candidates must meet CTC's U.S. Constitution requirement. Introduction to American Politics (POLI 111) or American History to 1877 (HIST 121), in the College of Arts and Sciences, or their equivalents, will satisfy the requirement.


Music Education Undergraduate Students

Students in the Bachelor of Music, Music Education program participate in a subject matter competency waiver program through undergraduate coursework. That is, they are not required to take the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).


Admissions Requirements

  • Evidence of enrollment in a subject matter competency program.
  • School of Music students are required to request a letter from the Director of the School of Music stating their progress toward the BM in Music Education.

Student Teaching Requirements: Subject Matter Competency

  • Evidence of subject matter competency is required to apply for student teaching.
  • School of Music students will submit evidence of subject matter competency via a subject-matter waiver letter issued by the Director of the School of Music.

Earn a Master of Arts in Education & Teaching Credential

Undergraduate students at the University of Redlands can complete up to 18 credit hours of degree work toward a teaching credential or Master of Arts in Education, Learning and Teaching as undergraduates. Students who wish to pursue a master's degree must apply to the School of Education.

Single Subject Undergraduate course transfers:

  • EDUG 402 or EDUG 402N (3) transfers to MALT 602
  • EDUG 404 or EDUG 404N (3) transfers to MALT 604
  • EDUG 406 or EDUG 406N (3) transfers to MALT 606
  • EDUG 408 or EDUG 408N (3) transfers to MALT 608

Student teaching must be completed at the graduate level for students seeking a Master's degree.


Undergraduate Application Deadlines

  • Fall Term - First Year: Early Action 1 (November 1), Early Action 2 (December 1), Regular Decision (January 15*)
  • Fall Term - Transfer: Priority Deadline (March 1*)
  • Spring Term - Transfer: Priority Deadline (November 1*)

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis after the deadline based on capacity.
