Program Overview


Master of Arts in Counseling and Psychotherapy

The Master of Arts in Counseling and Psychotherapy (MCPt) program is designed to prepare a next generation of Chinese counselors and psychotherapists. It is rigorous, rooted in Chinese culture, informed by best training practices, and taught by a world-class faculty.


Program Features

  • Student are trained by faculty who are recognized nationally and internationally for their scholarship and professional leadership.
  • Students develop their counseling skills under careful supervision at rigorous, high-quality training sites, most of which are accredited by CCPRS.
  • The curriculum is informed by competency-based principles and educational best practices, developed by program faculty who have been active in helping the profession develop those practices.

Admission Requirements

  • Evidence of a bachelor's or master's transcript with a minimum 2.3 GPA from a regionally-accredited institution or the international equivalent.
  • For graduates of non-English based programs, provide proof of English language proficiency within the last two years via one of the following:
    • Duolingo English Test score of 95 or higher (preferred).
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 or higher (or 213 computer-based, or 80 internet based).
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 or higher.
  • Personal Statement: 500 word essay describing personal experience and interest in the field.

Coursework & Program Pathways

  • The first 27 units of this program are offered in China as either in-person classes in Wuhan or online courses.
  • The final 13 units of this program will be taught in on the University of Redlands main campus during students’ final term in the program.
  • The coursework and field experience segments of the program are delivered in a prescribed sequence. Pathways are recommended for timely program completion.

  • Graduates come away from the rigorous curriculum of this program adept at providing culturally responsive mental health counseling and consultation through supervised clinical experiences tailored to their career goals.
