The Kodály Center at the University of Redlands hosts a Summer certificate program at our Marin campus in Northern California. This program offers three levels of certification in learnings derived from the philosophy and pedagogy of Zoltán Kodály.

All participants, new and returning, for the Kodály Certificate must register each summer. If you are returning for level 2 or 3, please register now (click here). The deadline to register for Summer 2025 is Thursday, June 12.

Pedagogy & Practicum
- MUS-671 Kodály Pedagogy I, Practicum (2 Credits). Course offers study of the philosophy and pedagogy of the Kodály approach to music education. Focus is on the Kodály-Ádám sequencing of concepts and lesson planning for Preschool, Kindergarten, and First and grades. Content includes games and activities leading to discovery of music elements.
- MUS-672 Kodály Pedagogy II, Practicum (2 Credits). Course offers a continuation of the study of the philosophy and pedagogy of the Kodály approach to music education. Focus is on the Kodály-Ádám sequencing of concepts and lesson planning for Second and Third grades. Content includes games and activities leading to discovery of music elements.
- MUS-673 Kodály Pedagogy III, Practicum (2 Credits). Course offers a continuation of the study of the philosophy and pedagogy of the Kodály approach to music education. Focus is on the Kodály-Ádám sequencing of concepts and lesson planning for Fourth, Fifth and Sixth grades and continuing. Content includes reading, writing, listening, and improvising activities leading to discovery of music elements.
Folk Song Materials
- MUS-674 Kodály Folk Music I (1 Credits). This course will introduce students to children's folk songs and singing games for use in pre-school and primary grades. Materials include songs, games, and dances from the rich diversity of musical traditions from diverse cultures. Students will be introduced to standard folk song analysis, music retrieval and main categories of children's music.
- MUS-675 Kodály Folk Music II (1 Credits). This course continues the study of folk music and folk lore of many cultures. Children's folk songs and singing games, folk music for ceremony, ritual and other functions will be explored, analyzed musically with Standard Analysis techniques, and considered within cultural contexts. Music retrieval and database collections will continue with multicultural materials.
- MUS-676 Kodály Folk Music III (1 Credits). This course continues the study of incorporating the musical cultures of other countries, and their use in a migrant setting into the classroom curriculum. These materials are studied to determine their suitability for pedagogical use and their ability to support the acquisition of musicianship skills in aural vocal developmental music programs of varying contexts, including older beginners, and mixed ability classes.
Kodály Solfege & Musicianship
- MUS-677 Kodály Musicianship I Foundation (1 Credits). This course is an introduction to the application of aural-vocal musicianship skills using moveable do solfege. Classes include sight singing, ear training, intonation, memorization, dictation, harmonic hearing, and stylistic analysis. Students will be asked to perform pre-assigned materials in class in groups and as individuals.
- MUS-678 Kodály Musicianship II (1 Credits). This course continues the development of aural-vocal musicianship skills using moveable do solfege, absolute, neutral pitches and hand signs beyond the foundational level. Activities include sight singing, ear training, intonation, memorization, dictation, harmonic hearing, and stylistic analysis. Students will perform pre-assigned materials in class individually and in groups.
- MUS-679 Kodály Musicianship III (1 Credits). Course continues the development of written and aural musicianship skills using moveable do solfege, absolute, and neutral pitches at an advanced level. Study will include in-depth understanding of the stylistic features of different periods of music. Students will perform pre-assigned and unfamiliar materials in class individually and in groups.
Kodály Conducting Courses
- MUS-680 Kodály Conducting I (1 Credits). This course will develop musical and conducting skills for choral works suitable for beginning groups. The course will involve practicum, reflection, observation, part work tasks (eg. sing & play) and conducting.
- MUS-681 Kodály Conducting II (1 Credits). The course will develop conducting skills further, employing a sequential course of study for choral works suitable for intermediate groups.
- MUS-682 Kodály Conducting III (1 Credits). This course highlights advanced choral conducting skills taught in a lab setting, allowing participants to put conducting theory into practice with a choral ensemble. The course will involve a detailed study of selected choral compositions both from the theoretical and practical point of view as well as the performance of the pieces.
