Overview
This module will provide students with the knowledge skills and experience to support the use of conscious sedation within the dental setting. Students will develop and enhance their skills surrounding advanced sedation techniques, drugs used and practical skills including the management of complications. The student will enhance their knowledge and intellectual skills to be able to support patients with anxiety and phobias when receive Dental treatment. Students will be able to understand the assessment process for undertaking conscious sedation and be aware of contraindications. Students will be equipped with the skills to recognise and manage the clinical environment to promote a positive experience and support patients and clients.
Aims
- Support the development of knowledge, skills, and competence to support advanced conscious sedation procedures,
- Promote safe clinical competence and to recognise and manage equipment, drugs and patients/clients care by following safe practice and IACSD national guidelines for conscious sedation.

Venue
Taught in person at GSTT hospital or online via MS Teams.
Typical intake
Semester 2.
Career Benefits
After the completion of this module the Dental Nurse will be able to assist with conscious sedation competently and safely for adults and children in any dental setting using conscious sedation techniques.
Entry Requirements
- Level 3 Dental Nursing Qualification
- Level 2 Maths and English
- Qualified Dental Nurse experienced for over 2 years
- Registered with the General Dental Council (GDC)
- Employed within an appropriate dental environment as a Dental Nurse
- Unrestricted registration with the GDC
