Leading centre for research

We are a leading centre for research in London for nursing, midwifery, allied health professions, public health and social care. 80% of our research into Allied Health Professions and Nursing was awarded the highest quality ratings of 4* or 3* for 'impact' in reach and significance (Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014).

Join us to benefit from our monthly doctoral support programme, where you can meet students at different points in their doctoral studies and benefit from peer support and sessions to support your learning. There are also development sessions organised by the Central Research Office for LSBU’s research students and a lively annual Summer School.

Advantages of a PhD

A PhD, by definition, is an original contribution to knowledge. It is distinct from a taught Masters in that your final output will be an extended dissertation or creative project relevant to your field of interest, rather than module-based coursework and exams.

Research students are expected to self-direct their learning with support from a supervisory team.

Entry Level Requirements

• UK Qualifications: Applicants for a Research Degree programme at LSBU are usually expected to have a good honours degree (2:1 and above) and a relevant postgraduate qualification, preferably a merit at Master's level.
• International Qualifications: Please also supply two academic references as part of your application. You will also be required to show proof of all of your qualifications.
• English Language Requirements: If English is not your first language you will be required to prove your competency in English, showing an IELTS score of at least 7.0 at postgraduate level.

Duration

• Full-time: 36 - 48 months
• Part-time: 48 - 72 months

• International applicants should use our international application system.

Research Proposal

• When applying, please attach an outline of your research proposal or a project summary (up to 3,000 words).
• The proposal should identify a clear research question and include a short literature review to identify the gap in knowledge. Please outline your methodological approach and chosen research methods.

Academic Technology Approval Scheme

• If you are a non-EU/EEA national, you may need to apply to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) for clearance from the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) in order to study this course.
