Overview
This module concentrates on the contribution of specialised modalities in children and young persons imaging. The module is of value to students studying on either Children and Young Persons Imaging or Diagnostic Imaging award pathways but may also be taken stand-alone.
Aims of the Module
- Acquire an understanding of CT, MR, RNI (including blended imaging) and US modalities in children and young persons imaging.
- Provide an understanding of dose optimisation and contrast use in children and young persons.
- Understand and utilise the rationales for different imaging modalities in children and young persons, including the use of GA, Sedation and play therapy.

Entry Requirements
- A degree or diploma in diagnostic radiography
- Currently working within a clinical department where appropriate experience of imaging and care for children and young people can be obtained
- If English is not the first language, students must have an IELTS average score of 7.0 on entry into the course. No individual elements should be below 7.0
Career Benefits
This module is beneficial for specialist staff currently working with paediatric imaging departments or those with an interest in paediatric imaging. Professionals undertaking this module will be able to use their knowledge and skills to enhance the service they provide in accordance with their employer's policies. Completion of the module may be used as evidence to support career progression, to include musculoskeletal system reporting as part of an Advanced Practitioner role.
Assessment
Formative Assessment
Activities during the module will develop the necessary skills required to select suitable cases for the summative assessment. Peer and tutor review of these activities will be encouraged via the use of online discussion forums and feedback is provided via tutor, peer, and self-evaluation.
Summative Assessment
Students will submit a poster, suitable for presentation at a national conference, which considers a range of image modalities relative to a selected pathology in paediatrics. Followed by up to 15-minute defence of material within poster.

Knowledge and Understanding
- Discuss and understand the concept and accurate application (including limitations) of conventional x-ray, MRI, CT, RNI (including blended imaging) and diagnostic US in children and young persons imaging.
- Demonstrate awareness of anatomical appearances on diagnostic images using imaging modalities other than plain radiography.
- Identify & recognise signs in images consistent with specific disorders.
- Evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness and role of the various imaging methods.
Intellectual Skills
- Analyse the particular considerations of presenting children and young person patients’ in relation to conventional x-ray, CT, MR, RNI (including blended imaging) or US.
- Demonstrate understanding of the principles of examination in conventional x-ray, CT, MR RNI (including blended imaging) or US.
Practical Skills
- Evaluate individual cases found in work placement and make reasoned choices for further diagnostic imaging.
- Effectively manage the local environment for accurate viewing of diagnostic images.
Transferable Skills
- Enable communication of a professional opinion based on the interpretation of a wide range of diagnostic imaging modalities.
