Overview
This is short professional module validated by the Nursing Midwifery Council. It prepares qualified nurses and midwives for independent prescribing.

Entry Requirements
- Registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council.
- At least 12 months post registration within the UK, prior to applying, as a nurse or midwife in the field in which you will be prescribing.
- The ability to study at Level 6
- An identified need for prescribing within your specified clinical practice
- Support from your employing organisation
- An identified prescribing clinician willing to act as clinical facilitator – Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP)
- Your DPP must be a doctor or an independent prescriber who has been prescribing for a minimum of 3 years. They must be currently actively prescribing and must be able to supervise you over the 6 months.
- Working clinically for a minimum of 25 hours a week in healthcare
- If you are self-employed, you need to show in your application how you intend to prescribe. You need to have at least one year’s experience in the field in which you intend to prescribe (see above criteria). There needs to be an identified need for prescribing in your current practice. This needs to be verified by the manager / lead in the area in which you work.
