Program Overview


Overview

The BEng (Hons) Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering (with Foundation Year) course at London South Bank University (LSBU) is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of electronic and computer systems engineering principles and practices. The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and is designed to meet the needs of industry and employers.


Course Structure

The course is a five-year full-time program that includes a foundation year, followed by three years of undergraduate study, and an optional placement year. The foundation year is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to progress to the undergraduate program.


Foundation Year

The foundation year is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of engineering principles and practices. The year is divided into two semesters, each consisting of four modules.


  • Applied Mathematics: This module provides students with the mathematical knowledge and skills to support study of BEng programs.
  • Scientific Principles for Engineering: This module covers the principles of chemistry and physics, at a level between GCSE and A-level.
  • Study & Laboratory Skills: This module introduces study skills considering both individual and team-working skills.
  • Practical Electronics: This module covers an introduction to practical electronics.

Undergraduate Program

The undergraduate program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of electronic and computer systems engineering principles and practices. The program is divided into three years, each consisting of two semesters.


Year 1

  • Engineering, mathematics and modelling: This module consolidates students' knowledge of a broad range of mathematical methods and techniques appropriate for engineering courses.
  • Object-orientated programming C++: This module aims to provide students with intermediate proficiency in the use of the C++ programming languages.
  • Electrical circuit analysis: This module provides students with the knowledge of analysing DC and AC electrical circuits.
  • Electronic principles: This module helps students develop their understanding of essential scientific principles for the study of engineering.
  • Digital logic design: This module covers the fundamental theory for the design of and the practical uses of digital electronics.
  • Design and practice: This module covers material design activities, team work, creative problem-solving, project management, and sustainable development principles.

Year 2

  • Discrete mathematics, data structures and algorithms: This module introduces the syntaxes and semantics of programming language Java and teaches students the intellectual knowledge in programming principles and programming skills with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) techniques.
  • Computer architecture and operating systems: This module covers computer systems from database system to advance computer architectures.
  • Data communications and computer networks: This module concentrates on teaching students to understand the basics of data communications and networking.
  • Analogue electronics: This module develops advanced techniques in analogue electronic design.
  • Embedded software design: This module concentrates on teaching students to understand the basics of embedded systems hardware and software.
  • Professional practice and team design project: This module develops students' understanding of the design process within engineering.

Year 3

  • Optional placement year

Year 4

  • Computer systems and software engineering: This module covers computer systems from database system to advance computer architectures.
  • Cyber security and cryptography: This module provides a thorough discussion on cybersecurity and cryptography.
  • Artificial intelligence and signal processing: This module focuses on the signal processing in intelligent systems applications.
  • Embedded systems and the Internet of Things: This module presents the nature and characteristics of embedded systems and the Internet of Things (IoT).
  • BEng project: The individual major project requires students to plan, execute, review and report upon a major piece of technical work directly related to their degree discipline.

Teaching and Assessment

Most modules are assessed through both examination and individual/group coursework, with typical weightings of 70% examination and 30% coursework. The course has a strong focus on practical skills and project-based learning.
