Overview
This module provides the range of clinical skills and development required for practitioners who wish to engage in the interpretation and comment on mammographic images. It provides important role development in this area and facilitates elements of advanced practice in mammography.

Students who successfully complete this module will be able to interpret mammographic images in both the NHS Breast Screening Programme and symptomatic settings.
Assessment
- Element 1 – Portfolio
- Element 2 - 4000 word written assignment.
- Element 3 - Online exam
All elements of assessment need to be passed to pass the module.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
- Recognise and interpret normal mammographic appearances and signs of benign and malignant disease and their clinical significance in both the screening and symptomatic clinics.
- Understand and critically evaluate the principles of population breast screening and quality assurance

- Demonstrate a reflective and analytical approach to work.
- Engage in sound clinical reasoning, effective decision-making and good judgement.
Practical Skills
- Develop a systematic and analytical approach to interpreting and evaluating mammographic images.
- Make reasoned and appropriate decisions on further action e.g. recall for additional investigations.
- Rationalise the limitations of knowledge, recognising where advice is needed and seeking it from appropriate sources.
Transferable skills
- Engage confidently in academic and professional communication with others.
- Engage in reflective practice and self and department clinical audit processes.
Entry Requirements
- Students should be practitioners eligible for registration, and working in areas where they can obtain appropriate practical experience.
- Student support for studying at Masters level is to be discussed with the pathway advisor. Students who have not previously undertaken study at academic Level 7 (Masters level) are advised to consider the workshop: Preparation for Masters Level Study, which can be found on the CPPD prospectus.
