Core Modules

  • Advanced Sound and Vision
    • Step into the world of filmmaking, where collaboration brings stories to life! Sharpen your skills in crafting moving image artefacts that capture the heart of a story through powerful visuals, sound, editing, and production design.
    • Work in teams through workshops in directing, producing, camera work, lighting, sound, editing, and sound design across documentaries and fiction.
    • Build a sophisticated understanding of digital environments, making sound decisions and taking ownership of your projects' outcomes.
  • Masters Project
    • Unleash your vision as you dive into a major, in-depth, individual study tailored to your discipline and career aspirations.
    • Take full ownership of your project, from idea to execution. Create artefacts, exhibitions, publications, campaigns, and digital works either from scratch or significantly developing your own previous work.
    • Integrate all your learning into a substantial body of work that showcases your vision as a creative practitioner.
  • Production
    • From concept to completion, you are guided through the creative, organisational, and technical processes of making short films to a professional standard.
    • You gain hands-on experience in production management, scheduling, budgeting, casting, and directing actors.
    • Take your original idea through preproduction and production to create a polished film as you master advanced techniques for overcoming challenges.
  • Project Research and Development
    • Dive deep into the creative process of filmmaking and develop innovative approaches to turning your ideas into reality.
    • Apply advanced principles and theoretical frameworks to critically engage with existing discourses and generate fresh, original concepts for the moving image.
  • The Connected Practitioner
    • Elevate your creative research skills, a cornerstone of all creative disciplines, fuelling both academic and creative work.
    • Learn engaging research practices and critical thinking to tackle real-world issues, policies, and audiences.

Advanced Practice (2-year full-time MA only)

How You Learn

  • You are immersed in creative practice and learn through doing; by making images, bodies of work, and real-world film artefacts.
  • Lectures are complemented by seminars, discussions, and technical demonstrations.
  • Collaborative group work is integral to the course, to reflect the dynamics of the filmmaking industry.
  • You are expected to initiate, design, and implement your own projects, in negotiation with tutors.
  • You also progressively become a more assured researcher, using a range of investigative methods to enrich your practice.

How You Are Assessed

  • Assessments include production of artefacts and bodies of work, critical reflection, essays, portfolio, presentations, and reports.

Entry Requirements

  • 2.2 or above in a related subject.
  • Non-EU international students who need a student visa to study in the UK should check our web pages on UKVI-compliant English language requirements.
  • The University also provides pre-sessional English language courses to help you meet the English language requirements.

Employability

  • Career opportunities include director, producer, editor, cinematographer, sound designer, screenwriter, production designer, or on visual effects.
