Overview

This two-year direct entrant programme develops you as an accountable, compassionate nursing associate, committed to promoting health and preventing illness.


Course Details

Year 1 Core Modules

  • Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology
    • Explore body systems, altered cognition, disability, illnesses and disease, ensuring parity of content.
    • Engage in all four fields of nursing practice, utilising a whole person approach with emphasis on the complexity of the individual.
  • Developing Professional Practice of the Nursing Associate
    • Take part in practice-based learning within your place of employment and your placement areas.
    • Simulate clinical skills and procedures to support your work-based learning.
  • Introduction to Public Health for Nursing Associates
    • Explore decision-making and therapeutic interventions within nursing associate practice across a range of health and social care settings.
    • Examine the relevant theories and influences linked to the wider determinants of health and wellbeing.
  • Person-centered Care – the service user experience
    • Explore the philosophical basis and key concepts underpinning approaches to working with different people and service user groups.
    • Examine the biopsychosocial experience and impact of altered health and wellbeing, physical illness, cognition or treatment of the person and family from the service user perspective.
  • Study Skills and Professionalism
    • Develop study skills, introduce reflective practice, and understand professionalism and professional practice.
    • Explore the theoretical concepts underpinning professional practice, including self-awareness, resilience, and self-management.

Year 2 Core Modules

  • Caring for People with Acute and Long-term Conditions and Co-morbidities
    • Develop knowledge and understanding of acute and long-term conditions across the health and social care sector.
    • Explore the impact of co-morbidities on patient experience and outcomes.
  • Developing Public Health in Practice for Nursing Associates
    • Examine public health inequalities within health and social care practice.
    • Appraise epidemiological and demographic data, national and local public health policies to identify areas of need for service users, communities, and the wider population.
  • Enhancing Professional Practice for the Nursing Associate
    • Further develop knowledge and skills for practice.
    • Build on clinical skills base and ability to select and use best available evidence to support decision-making in practice according to your role.
  • Investigating Evidence and Contributing to Change
    • Develop knowledge and skills relating to health and social care practice.
    • Critically appraise evidence relevant to the subject and explore how evidence is used to underpin national guidelines, decision-making, and high-quality nursing practice.
  • Working in Teams
    • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the unique perspectives, knowledge, and skills of the people you work with, and different members of the health and social care team.

How You Learn

  • This course is a two-year full-time programme.
  • Attend study days at university in six block weeks a year.
  • Remainder of hours is a combination of study weeks and clinical placement.
  • Study ten modules and take part in a variety of clinical placements across the four fields of nursing.
  • Complete a minimum of 1,150 hours in practice placements, built into the course.
  • Complete guided study and self-directed learning to enhance knowledge and understanding.
  • Participate in interprofessional learning opportunities.

How You Are Assessed

  • Assessment strategies include assignments, multiple-choice questions, written examination, numeracy examination, and clinical proficiencies within a practice assessment document.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum of two GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English language and maths.
  • Minimum of 54 UCAS points, achieved through A level (or equivalent qualifications).
  • Shortlisting criteria:
    • Ability to complete all sections of the application form fully and correctly.
    • Level of all qualifications and grades specified.
    • Appropriate academic entry requirements achieved or predicted.
    • Personal statement supportive of chosen course and demonstrates the uniqueness of the profession and the role.
    • Satisfactory appropriate supportive references (academic/employer/character).
  • Interview criteria:
    • Knowledge of chosen profession/career.
    • Appreciation of the demands of the course and chosen profession.
    • Enthusiasm for the course/profession.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and non-verbally.
    • A future for the specialism.

  • Maintain professional knowledge on an ongoing basis to meet NMC revalidation requirements.
