BEng Mining Engineering - 2026 entry
Overview
Learn how to responsibly manage the extraction of natural resources that are essential for modern society to function. Understand the mining lifecycle, mining value chain, and the investment and fundraising environment. Address the challenges of environmental sustainability, governance, and social responsibility. Undertake an industry work placement in a mining business or operational environment. Fieldwork at local mine sites offers extensive, hands-on practical experience.
Entry Requirements
- Typical offer: A-Level: AAB-ABB, IB: 34/665-32/655, BTEC: DDD-DDM
- Contextual offers: A-Level: BBB-BBC, IB: 30/555-28/544, BTEC: DDM-DMM
- Required subjects: GCE A-Level Maths grade B and another science subject at grade B. Candidates may offer GCE A-Level Maths, Pure Maths, or Further Maths.
- GCSE: Grade 4/C in GCSE English language
- Access to HE: 30 L3 Credits at Distinction Grade and 15 L3 credits at Merit Grade - 24 L3 Credits at Distinction Grade and 21 L3 credits at Merit Grade
- T-Level: Distinction in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction; Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing; Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control; or Maintenance, Installation & Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing only
Course Content
- Year 1: 120 credits of compulsory modules, including Engineering Mathematics and Scientific Computing, Multi-Disciplinary Group Challenge Project, Fundamentals of Engineering, Fundamentals of Mechanics, Fundamentals of Materials, and Fundamentals of Electronics
- Year 2: 120 credits of compulsory modules, including Discipline Group Challenge Project, Resource Cycle and Value Chain, Resource Extraction Methods, Resource Development, Geotechnics, and Geotechnics
- Final year: 120 credits of compulsory modules, including Individual Project, Resource Infrastructure and Mine Services, Mineral Processing, Recycling and Resource Recovery, Politics, Mining and Sustainable Development, Surface Excavation Design, and Tunnelling and Excavation Design

- Tuition fees for 2025 entry: UK students: £9,535 per year, International students: £30,900 per year
- Scholarships: The University of Exeter has many different scholarships available to support your education, including £5 million in scholarships for international students applying to study with us in the 2025/26 academic year
Learning and Teaching
- Lectures, seminars, and practicals: Laboratory-based or in and around mining operations
- Placement: Complete a work placement in the summer between years 2 and 3 in a mining environment
- Fieldwork: Many fieldwork opportunities for undertaking practical assessments, including visits to local mine sites
