Program Overview
Philosophy and Psychology BA
Overview
By combining these two unique disciplines, you'll gain an understanding of how our minds develop and function, and how we think about our lives, relationships, and society.
Course Structure
- Year one: You'll take a range of modules that provide a solid foundation in both philosophy and psychology.
- Year two: You'll have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of optional modules in both subjects.
- Year three: You'll continue to take a mix of compulsory and optional modules, and you'll also have the opportunity to write a dissertation on a topic of your choice.
Philosophy Modules
- Reasoning, Argument, and Logic: You'll learn about the nature and structure of arguments, and how to assess the arguments of others.
- Mind, Knowledge, and Ethics: You'll explore philosophical thinking about understanding ourselves and our relationship with the world.
- Metaphysics, Science, and Language: You'll examine questions about the nature of reality, knowledge, and language.
- Philosophy of Religions: You'll explore the philosophical frameworks of different religions and consider the problems of religious diversity.
- History of Philosophy: Ancient to Modern: You'll learn about the development of philosophical ideas from ancient to modern times.
Psychology Modules
- Social Psychology: You'll examine how we define the self, attitudes, attribution, obedience, aggression, pro-social behavior, and formation of friendships.
- Developmental Psychology: You'll learn about cognitive, linguistic, and social development from early to late childhood.
- Cognitive Psychology 1: You'll study the methods used by cognitive psychologists to investigate mental processes in humans.
- Biological Psychology: You'll learn about the neural and biological bases of cognition and behavior.
Assessment
- A combination of essays and exams are the norm for most essay-based modules.
- Weekly reading summaries, presentations, and online quizzes and tests may also be used by individual lecturers.

- 32 Points overall or 665 in 3 Higher Level Subjects (IB)
- IELTS 6.5 overall (with no less than 6.0 in any element)

Additional Costs

- You'll be able to access most of the books you'll need through our libraries, though you may wish to buy your own copies of core texts.
- A limited number of modules have compulsory texts which you are required to buy.
- We recommend that you budget £100 per year for books.
