Music with Creative Music Technology BA

Overview

Music transforms lives. Technology transforms the way we create, perform and consume music, and continues to fundamentally shape the way we experience it. Through this programme, you will develop advanced musical skills, such as performance and composition, alongside technical expertise in a range of creative technologies.

Course Information

Year One

  • Communicating Music: Develop core skills in explaining various musical styles to both specialist and general audiences, in oral and written formats.
  • Introduction to Studio Recording: Explore sound propagation and acoustic properties that inform microphone selection.
  • Music History from Analogue to Digital: Examine a range of musical styles and trends from the late 19th century to today.
  • Understanding Music: Analyse the fundamental building blocks of music, including notation, scales and modes, melody, rhythm, texture, harmony, and form.

Year Two

  • Sound Design and Synthesis: Explore sound theory and sonic husbandry in order to cultivate an organic approach to sound creation.
  • Studio Recording Practice: Develop professional skills in applications of microphones and their placement within a variety of acoustic spaces, and for a variety of instrumentation.
  • Creative Orchestration: Learn how to write for orchestral instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and harp.
  • Composing for Voice: Explore different styles of vocal music, practice writing songs and choral pieces, and get an introduction to composing for musical theatre and opera.

Year Three

  • Final Project: Complete an independent project throughout your final year, supported by one-to-one supervision.
  • Music and Mixed Reality Collaborative Project: Introduce music and computer science students to diverse approaches to combining music/audio with mixed reality (immersive technologies, AI, VR) in a series of lectures by Music and Computer Science staff/specialists.
  • Approaches to Music Education: Participate in primary school music teaching in partnership with the Nottingham Music Hub.
  • Collaborative Performance and Musical Leadership: Introduce key areas of musical leadership and teamwork, such as rehearsal management and conducting, aspects of artist-citizenship, entrepreneurship, and strategies for planning and delivering group performance projects.
