Course Overview

This course develops your knowledge, skills, and confidence to work with children, young people, and families, engaging with diverse communities, challenging inequality, and transforming people's lives.


Course Details

  • Tuition Fees: £9,535 per year (capped at a maximum of 20% of this during your placement year) for Home students; £18,000 per year (capped at a maximum of 20% of this during your placement year) for International/EU students

Course Structure

The course is divided into three years, with the option to take a placement year between the second and third years.


Year 1

  • Children As Communicators And Thinkers: Develops an awareness of the development of communication and literacy skills and the impact of this on thinking, learning, and participation in childhood.
  • Introduction To Children And Childhoods: Introduces key theories and concepts related to children and young people's holistic development and learning.
  • Learning To Learn: Enables you to explore practice associated with effective learning and development.
  • Practice To Keep Children Healthy And Safe: Explores the health, wellbeing, and safety of children and equips you to evaluate the wider public health agenda.

Year 2

  • Play And Enabling Environments: Develops knowledge and understanding of the pedagogy of play and the importance of enabling and inclusive environments and spaces in childhood.
  • Responding To Childhood Adversities: Explores the impact and interplay of individual and societal factors on a child's learning, development, wellbeing, and outcomes.
  • Elective Modules: Choose from a range of elective modules, including Autism, Forest Schools, Introduction To Counselling Skills, School And The Curriculum, Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages, Trauma Informed Practice, and Working With Professionals.

Year 3

  • Global And Contemporary Issues: Explores a range of local and international societal, historical, and systemic issues within education, childhood, and inclusion.
  • Learning And Wellbeing In Childhood: Builds on knowledge and understanding gained at level four and level five to consider the adult role in supporting development, learning, and wellbeing in childhood.
  • Project: Enables you to critically reflect on your values and skills in the context of the world of work, considering inclusivity and industry sector values.
  • Working In Partnership With Children And Families: Develops knowledge and understanding of policy and practice relating to working in partnership with families and professionals.

Career Opportunities

This course prepares you to progress into a career in education, family liaison, counselling, social work, youth work, and mental health work. Some of these careers require further postgraduate training.

You will have access to industry-standard teaching facilities and equipment, including our Early Childhood Studies classroom. Our City Campus is located in the heart of Sheffield, within minutes of the train and bus stations.


Entry Requirements

  • UCAS Points: 112-120
  • GCSE: English Language or English Literature at grade C or 4, Mathematics at grade C or 4
  • Experience: Experience of working/supporting children in school or informal settings on a paid or voluntary basis is desirable but not essential
  • DBS Check: You will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal record check prior to or during the enrolment week of your course.
