BSc (Honours) Psychology with Foundation Year

Course Summary

This course is a highly regarded, expert-led program that explores the science of thoughts, feelings, and behavior. It includes an initial foundation year to prepare students for the course. The program is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and gives eligibility for the graduate basis for chartered membership (GBC) with the BPS.

How You Learn

You'll benefit from research-led learning, contributing to research projects, and developing your own research skills. You'll learn through seminars, workshops, lab classes, lectures, tutorials, work placements, field trips, and supervision.

Modules

Year 1

• Contemporary Issues In Social Science 1: Examines contemporary themes and issues relevant to the study of psychology, sociology, social policy, politics, and international relations.
• Contemporary Issues In Social Science 2: Expands knowledge of these disciplines and develops academic skills for successful progression into higher education.

Year 2

• Fundamentals In Psychology 1: Introduces key theories, research, applications, and conceptual and historical issues relating to developmental psychology, social psychology, and individual differences.
• Fundamentals In Psychology 2: Introduces further theories, research, applications, and conceptual and historical issues relating to cognitive psychology, psychobiology, and individual differences.
• Psychological Research And Design: Helps you understand, design, and develop research in psychology, with an understanding of the main qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• Psychology Practicals And Statistics: Provides skills to answer basic psychological research questions, learning how to analyze data using qualitative and quantitative methods.

Year 3

• Processes In Psychology: Strengthens critical understanding and application of cognitive psychology, psychobiology, and neuroscience, as well as physiological and genetic approaches to individual differences.
• Psychology In Context: Strengthens critical understanding and application of key theories in social psychology, developmental psychology, and individual differences.
• Research Methods Training: Extends research design, quantitative and statistical analytical knowledge, providing skills to undertake more advanced psychological research designs.

Year 4

• Inclusive And Ethical Practice In Psychology: Supports you to develop into a fully ethically aware psychology student, ready to design and carry out psychology projects with the potential for real positive impact.
• Psychology Research Project: Engages in an extensive and independent psychology research project, applying knowledge and skills to ethics procedures and the production of a substantial written report.

Optional Modules

• Applying Psychology: Provides significant employer interaction and associated learning, immersing in work-integrated learning (WIL) projects co-created with external organizations.
• Study Abroad - Social Sciences: Allows undergraduate students to study abroad in their second year, Semester 2, at one of the University's approved partner institutions worldwide.
• Work Placement (Psychology): Provides an extended period of work placement to enhance employability experience and skills, gaining direct psychological insight into the world of work.
• Placement Year: Enhances professional development through the completion of and reflection on meaningful work placement(s).

Future Careers

This psychology degree prepares you to complete professional training in clinical psychology, educational psychology, occupational psychology, health psychology, forensic psychology, counseling psychology, and sports psychology. It also prepares you for a career in teaching, local government, civil service, industry and commerce, education, careers and counseling, legal and advice work, social work, social research, personnel and human resources, marketing and advertising, and management.

Equipment and Facilities

You'll benefit from our award-winning Centre for Behavioural Science and Applied Psychology, applying contemporary psychological theory and behavioral science to issues of wellbeing, health, social inclusion, cognition, and behavior change. You'll also have the opportunity to experience our specialist research facilities, such as an observation suite, an eye-tracking laboratory, a BioPac psychophysics laboratory, a low-level vision laboratory, a food laboratory, EEG equipment, and tDCS.

Entry Requirements

• UCAS points: 64
• GCSE: English Language at grade C or 4 or equivalent, Maths at grade C or 4 or equivalent
• ACCESS: Access to HE Diploma, with at least 45 level 3 credits
• International students: If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent.

Fees and Funding

• Home students: Tuition fees for 2026/27 are not yet confirmed. Our tuition fee for UK students on this course in 2025/26 is £5,760 for the foundation year and £9,535 per year for the degree (capped at a maximum of 20% of this during your placement year).
• International students: Our tuition fee for International/EU students starting full-time study in 2026/27 is £18,000 per year (capped at a maximum of 20% of this during your placement year).
