FdA Working with Children, Young People and Families

Course summary

This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to work effectively with children, young people, and families in a range of settings. The course is developed in consultation with employers and is compliant with the Hallam Model, embedding a person-centered approach to professional knowledge, skills, and behaviors in practice.

Modules

Year 1

  • Child Development: This module helps students understand key areas of child development, applying current knowledge and research to practice with children, young people, and families.
  • Cypf Practice 1: This module develops and demonstrates key competencies for safe and effective practice with children, young people, and families, with a minimum of 200 hours of assessed practice in a professional CYPF workplace.
  • Personal, Professional And Academic Development: This module develops students' knowledge and understanding of the personal, professional, and academic development required to work with children, young people, and families.
  • Preparing For Practice With Cypf: This skills-focused module equips students with a range of skills and knowledge to help them work effectively in a range of settings, supporting work with children, young people, and families.
  • Safeguarding And Assessment: This module develops students' awareness, knowledge, and skills in relation to safeguarding and protecting children, young people, and their families.

Year 2

  • Advancing Practice With Cypf: This module further develops students' competence, skills, and knowledge in working with children, young people, and families in a range of multi-agency settings.
  • Cypf Practice 2: This module builds on the Children, Young People & Families Practice 1 experiences, further developing and demonstrating a range of skills and competencies for effective practice in the children, young people, and families workplace.
  • Refugees And Migrant Families: This module develops students' skills and knowledge in working with children, young people, and families from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
  • Research For Practice With Cypf: This module develops students' understanding of research skills and the applicability of research to children, young people, and families practice.
  • Theory And Practice Of Parenting: This module develops students' skills and knowledge for working with families in a prevention or early intervention setting to develop parenting capacity.

Graduates of this course have gone on to work in:

  • Educational settings in schools, colleges, and pupil referral units (PRUs)

Where will I study?

The course is based at the Collegiate Crescent campus, which is located just off Ecclesall Road, a bustling student district.


Entry requirements

  • 64 UCAS points, including at least 24 points from an A level or equivalent BTEC National qualification
  • Access to HE Diploma from a QAA recognised Access to HE course in social science, health studies, health science, nursing, or another relevant course
  • GCSEs in English Language or Literature at grade C or 4 or equivalents
  • IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent

Fees and funding

Tuition fees for 2026/27 are not yet confirmed. The tuition fee for UK students on full-time undergraduate courses in 2025/26 is £9,535 per year. NA
