CPD Professional Nurse Advocate (Online)
Course aim
The Professional Nurse Advocate course is a clinical and professional leadership programme which aims to:
- equip nurses with the skills and knowledge to deliver restorative clinical supervision to their colleagues and teams across the NHS in England
- lead quality improvement initiatives to improve patient care
- contribute to positive cultures of learning.
This version of the course is delivered totally online, making it the ideal option no matter where you're based in the UK.
Course content
The nationally funded programme (launched by NHSE in March 2021) provides senior nurses with the skills to listen and understand the challenges and demands of colleagues, then to lead support and deliver quality improvement initiatives in response to them.
The content is aligned with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Professional Nurse Advocate Standards for Education and Training Programmes and Modules and is RCN accredited.
The course is delivered over 15 weeks on a Thursday and is delivered online supported by the LJMU online virtual learning platform. This distance learning approach allows the course to be delivered to learners based across England and the UK.
The content of the programme enables some flexible learning to support staff in the current complex climate of care and will combine teaching delivery via Microsoft Teams and remote learning activities via the virtual learning platform.
The teaching and learning on the programme comprises of the following activities:
- Lectures, tutorials, and workshops: The core of each module delivery mode is a series of tutor-led or group-led seminars or workshops which are all delivered online using platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
- Practical application of learning occurs in the form of simulated experiences and action learning will be promoted to link theory to practice.
- The programme is also supported throughout with directed independent study comprising of independent learning which supports students to add depth and breadth to their knowledge of topics, to practice skills and to reflect on critical incidents and their practice, all fully supported and underpinned by online content.
Regular academic supervision is provided by a designated member of the Programme team throughout the programme.
The assessment, a portfolio of learning aligned to the RCN accredited proficiencies for Professional Nurse Advocate is supported by continuous opportunities for reflective learning which is used to support the development of the required assessment.
Teaching and learning
Syllabus:
- The role of the Professional Nurse Advocate within the context of national and local governance policies.
- Restorative Clinical Supervision including approaches such as coaching, motivational interviewing, reflection and debriefing.
- Supervisor/supervisee relationship, including delivering and managing clinical supervision in practice.
- Ethical & Legal considerations in clinical supervision which may affect the supervisory process for example, conflict of interest, maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality
- Strategies to support staff wellbeing and resilience, including burn out, compassion and self-care.
- Leadership theories, focusing on compassionate leadership and the PNA as a leader.
- Approaches to quality improvement in practice to ensure people experience safe, compassionate, person-centred care including the concept of advocacy.
- Regional and national forums supporting the role of the PNA and ongoing development and support the PNA.
- Approaches to evidence-based practice.
- Self-Awareness, emotional intelligence and ongoing development in the role of the PNA
Delivery Format:
The programme will be delivered through online learning.
The overall programme length will be 15 weeks.
Content will be flexible to accommodate and support staff in the current complex climate of care and will combine teaching delivery via a virtual platform such as Microsoft Teams and remote learning activities via the virtual learning platform.
The core delivery of each programme is via a series of tutor-led or group-led lectures or workshops which are delivered through attendance online using platforms such as Microsoft Teams. This will be supported by offering tutorial support to students to work towards the successful achievement of the assessment. Practical application in the forms of simulated experiences and action learning will be promoted to link theory to practice.
Regular academic supervision will be available by a designated member of the Programme team
Reflective activities to support development of portfolio
Directed independent study comprising of independent learning by expecting participants to add depth and breadth to their knowledge of topics, to practice skills and to reflect on critical incidents and their practice supported by the virtual learning platform for online content

Qualification requirements
- Alternative qualifications considered
Learners must hold an active NMC registration.
Learners must be employed in a registered nursing role.
Learners must practice within a health care setting that provides NHS or NHS commissioned services.
Learners must provide evidence of holding a level 6 academic award
Those without a level 6 award must provide evidence of equivalent experiential learning
