About your course

Our BA (Hons) Events Management course offers you exciting opportunities to manage a range of different events and secure essential professional experience. That's why you can expect to enjoy excellent career prospects in the arts, culture and music, exhibitions and venues, and tourism and hospitality industries.

Event Management roles require people who are level-headed and well organised but also enthusiastic, creative and dynamic. Teamwork is a crucial part of running any successful event and in your second year you have the chance to create, develop and manage your own live event as part of a team, working with real clients, venues and attendees.

Festivals, meetings, conventions, exhibitions and sports events all make up the events industry, and you will have plenty of opportunities to get a feel for different kinds of events from field trips, attending live events and expert guest speakers.

You will also gain hands-on experience working for a variety of clients at locations and venues across the country. Liverpool is well known for its thriving events scene. Events such as Sound City, Africa Oye, World Gymnastics Championships 2022, Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) and The Good Business Festival all put Liverpool on the map as a big player in the events industry.

Events Management Top-Up

This one year, full time, top-up degree is ideal for students who are completing/already hold a relevant HND, relevant Foundation degree, or Diploma and want to top-up their qualification and boost employment prospects by gaining an honours degree. The Top Up programme joins the Level 6 (3rd year) students on the Events Management degree.

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have one of the following: a Foundation Degree with 60% or above in a relevant subject or a relevant HND with overall Merit (240 credits).

Your Learning Experience

Teaching Support Assessment

Excellent facilities and learning resources

We adopt an active blended learning approach, meaning you will experience a combination of face-to-face and online learning during your time at LJMU. This enables you to experience a rich and diverse learning experience and engage fully with your studies. Our approach ensures that you can easily access support from your personal tutor, either by meeting them on-campus or via a video call to suit your needs.

Teaching is via a combination of lectures, workshops, online activities and small-group tutorials in which you can discuss course material more informally. In addition, you will be expected to attend live events, undertake site visits, carry out your own research online and join relevant events associations and societies.

We also offer the opportunity to undertake an optional field trip that will allow you to contextualise theory, experience a new destination and have fun. Previous destinations have included Edinburgh, Newcastle and Amsterdam.

Work-related Learning

Throughout the course we encourage you to develop your skills and experience the world of events through a range of work-related learning options. Employers offer opportunities to all Event Management students via our online noticeboard, EventStart. So you could find yourself working at prestigious music concerts, convention and exhibition venues, fashion shows, award dinners or cultural events.

In level 5 you get the opportunity to plan, stage and evaluate your own live event, giving you valuable work-related experience whilst raising money for a charity of your choice.

The best way to immerse yourself in the industry, however, is to undertake a year’s work placement between your second and third year, either in the UK or overseas. This will show you what it’s really like to work full time in the industry and get the buzz that comes with running a successful event. You will also put into practice what you have learnt during the course and gain new skills to add to your CV, which will significantly boost your employability.

Dedicated personal tutor, plus study skills support

You will be allocated a personal tutor with whom you can discuss course-related issues, work on a personal development plan and set your own targets. You will have scheduled one-to-one meetings with your tutor, but they can be approached at any time should you need additional support.

Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.

We recognise that all students perform differently depending on how they are assessed, which is why we use a range of assessment methods. These vary according to the module, but they could include:

  • written work
  • presentations (group or individual)
  • practical assessments
  • portfolios (including e-portfolios)
  • planning and implementing your own β€˜live’ event

Feedback is given for each assessment, as we believe this is vital in helping you to identify your strengths as well as areas where you may need to put in more work.

Career paths

The events industry is big business and you can expect to enjoy varied career opportunities both in the UK and overseas after graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in Events Management.

Liverpool Business School has historically had an excellent employment record with graduates securing graduate-level positions with leading employers in public and private sectors. These include Everton Football Club, Kellogg company, Santander and Deloitte.

Business visits and events are worth over Β£22 billion to Britain’s economy and the value of business transacted at trade events is estimated to generate over Β£100 billion a year. As such, you can expect to enjoy excellent career prospects in areas like event administration, sport, arts, music, conventions, exhibitions, meetings, event-related venues, event tourism and event hospitality. There will be opportunities in all sectors – commercial, local authority and voluntary – or you could even set yourself up as a self-employed events professional.

Student Futures - Careers, Employability and Enterprise Service

A wide range of opportunities and support is available to you, within and beyond your course, to ensure our students experience a transformation in their career trajectory. Every undergraduate curriculum includes Future Focus during Level 4, an e-learning resource and workshop designed to help you to develop your talents, passion and purpose.

Every student has access to Careers Zone 24/7, LJMU's suite of online Apps, resources and jobs board via the LJMU Student Futures website.

We are looking for applicants who are considering a future career as a successful Events Manager. Potential students should be able to demonstrate experience, enthusiasm, commitment and motivation related to Events Management.

In addition, applicants must be able to manage and organise their own time in order to complete coursework, revise for examinations, attend lectures punctually and complete appropriate work placements.
