Overview

The M.S. in Microbiology provides a postgraduate education in the basic science disciplines, including microbiology, immunology and food safety, while embracing an integrative approach to science. You have three options for earning your graduate degree: 1) Traditional M.S., which requires the completion of a major research project and preparation of a formal thesis; 2) Accelerated M.S., which allows you to earn both your bachelor's and master's degrees in five years and also involves the completion of a thesis; and 3) Non-thesis Applied M.S., which involves writing a scholarly paper based on a limited research project and extensive literature review.


Accelerated Master’s Programs

Accelerated Master’s Programs (AMPs) are intended for exceptional UArizona undergraduate students seeking to begin a master’s degree while completing their bachelor’s degree. Students earn both degrees in as few as 5 years. Connect with your academic advisor for more information.


Graduate College Admissions Requirements

  • An awarded four-year undergraduate bachelor degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable international degree recognized by the home country Ministry of Education. (For international students see Minimum International Degree Requirements.)
  • Proof of English proficiency is required for international applicants who hold citizenship from a country where English is not the official language. (View our English Requirement list to verify your need to submit an English proficiency test.)
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher based on a 4.0 scale for Degree seeking applicants.

Individual programs may have additional requirements, such as a higher minimum GPA or test scores, please verify requirements with your program of interest. Applicants will also be required to submit a statement of purpose and at least one letter of recommendation.
