Program Overview
Irish and Spanish
Overview
This course combines the study of Irish and Spanish, providing students with a broad understanding of the languages, literatures, and cultures of Ireland and the Spanish-speaking world.
Course Structure
The course is divided into four stages, each lasting one year. Students will study a range of modules in both Irish and Spanish, including language, literature, and culture.
Stage 1
In the first year, students will take modules in Irish language, literature, and culture, as well as Spanish language and culture. They will also have the opportunity to study a range of optional modules, including Celtic mythology, introduction to Latin American studies, and Scottish Gaelic language.
Stage 2
In the second year, students will continue to study Irish and Spanish language and literature, as well as a range of optional modules, including Irish history, Spanish memoirs and autobiographies, and the fantastic in Latin America.
Stage 3
In the third year, students will spend a year abroad in a Spanish-speaking country, where they will have the opportunity to study, work, or volunteer. This will provide them with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world.
Stage 4
In the final year, students will return to Queen's University Belfast and complete a range of modules in Irish and Spanish, including a dissertation on a topic of their choice.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a high level of fluency, accuracy, and spontaneity in both Irish and Spanish
- Analyze and interpret a range of texts in both languages
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of the cultures and literatures of Ireland and the Spanish-speaking world
- Communicate effectively in both languages, both orally and in writing
- Demonstrate a range of skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning
Assessment
Assessment will be through a combination of coursework, examinations, and practical assessments.

Graduates of this course will have a range of career opportunities, including teaching, translation, journalism, and business.

Tuition fees for this course are as follows:
- Northern Ireland: £4,855
- Republic of Ireland: £4,855
- England, Scotland, and Wales: £9,535
- EU Other: £22,400
- International: £22,400
Entry Requirements
- ABB including A-level Irish and Spanish
- Note: for applicants who have not studied A-level Spanish, then AS-level Spanish grade B would be acceptable in lieu of A-level Spanish
- A maximum of one BTEC/OCR Single Award or AQA Extended Certificate will be accepted as part of an applicant's portfolio of qualifications with a Distinction* being equated to a grade A at A-level and a Distinction being equated to a grade B at A-level
International Students
International students can apply for this course through UCAS or directly to Queen's University Belfast. English language requirements are as follows:
- IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each test component
- Equivalent acceptable qualification
